HERZOG'S LADS DISPLAY DARING PLAYONBASES Reds Compare Well With St. - Louis and Chicago in the Early Season Games in , Cincinnati. ' " BY C. H. ZUBER. CINCINNATI, April 23.-rThose fans who declined to admit after the opening game that the Reds were not as pood aa . they were doped out after their return from the south, may now spring the old "I-told-you-so" sag. That Initial contest did not represent the true form of Herzog's men; and while they have met with a few defeats eince that time, it is plain that the team is up to advance notices, and that the good showing made by the new line-up in the preliminary contests was not a fluke. If there is one fault to be found with the Reds in their present performances it is that they are Just a trifle reckless with their base running. To date they have gotten away with about 50 per cent of their efforts to steal bases, this figure representing a fair effort. However, Manager Herzog must be commended for not keeping his men glued to the sacks, and it is reasonable to suppose that a happy medium will be struck soon by which the full speed of the team on the base lines Is realized, without wasting too many real opportunities in efforts to run up a big base stealing record. Reds Look Strong. We've now seen the Pittsburgs and the Cardinals, and have failed to note in what respect either of these teams has anything on the Reds. And as the members of the St. Louis team tell us that the Cubs are no stronger that the Reds, it looks as if Herzog's men have a good chance to keep pace with the rest of the western teams all season. An opportunity to make the real Cincinnati-Chicago comparison will be offered next Sunday, when the Cubs make their first appearance of the season on the local lot. Manager Bresnahan, the new head of the Chicago crew, has made a cumber of important changes in his line-up, so that it will require some time for the real strength of his team to develop, which also is true of the Reds. Outfield Shows Speed. Manager Herzog's wisdom in selecting players with experience as the real foundation for his team this year has been demonstrated in the results so far. With the veteran Tommy Leach in center to sort of supervise the work of the youngsters on either side of him, the Reds' outfield is one of the speediest, as well as most intelligent !n the business. The infield is equally wise, with Wollwitz as the only rookie in the lot

The catching department is the best In either league, while recent games indicate that two high-class pitching recruits have been uncovered in Dale and Brown, the latter a left-hander, thus giving the team a much stronger twirling staff than was anticipated. And if these pitchers keep up their present gait well, nothing but the first division will fit. 9

ANDY PROMISES JEFF FIGHT OF HIS CAREER "This boy, Andy Howell, who meets Ray Jeffries in the wind-up of Billy Ben's fight card Monday night, is going to give some one a pleasant little surprise or I miss my guess," says Billy, who in a long distance phone conversation with Andy's manager was told that Howell has been up against some of the ring celebrities in the past. He has been in the ring against Milburn Saylor and has a decision over Abe Kabakoff of Memphis, Tenn., a battler of no mean ability. Howell is a lanky lad with good chest development and rather slender legs and looks a fighter. Jeff is still hammering away at every sparring partner he can get to work with and they are all of the opinion that he will be much' better than in his last time out.
