IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS SHOW METHOD DONN ROBERTS USED TO 000ST SALARY $1,000
TERRE HAUTE, April 23 Testimony concerning the method whereby Donn Roberts as Mayor succeeded in boosting . his salary from $3,000 to
$4,000 was introduced today in the lm-
peachment proceedings against Roberts before the city council. Voorhees Griffith, who was ousted by Roberts as city controller, was the first witness called and he occupied the stand most of the day. He identified vouchers signed ' by Roberts for his pay. Mr. William Slinkard, an attorney of Bloomfield, appeared at the opening and said he would act as Roberts' counsel. Roberts is in Leavenworth prison serving a six year sentence for election frauds. A long argument regarding Slinkard's authority to act for Roberts ensued, but he was permitted to question the witness. The nature of his questions brought a reprimand from Harry Stean, president of the council. Stean asserted Slinkard was attempting to burlesque the proceedings. An alleged conspiracy on the part of Roberts to make city funds available for "street contractors also was bared. Griffith testified Roberts had tried to induce the city sinking fund board to sink $60,000 in county road bonds. "I told Roberts that would be Illegal."

City Attorney Charles Batt also told him the proceedings were Illegal. Til get you an opinion that is worth something,' Roberts said. He called up Inman who also told him it was illegal." Slinkard who was attorney for Judge Redman in the election contest with Charles Pulliam, Republican, in his opening statement demanded that the charges against Roberts be made more specific. The counsel declined to make any changes in the charges and the case proceeded. Twenty-two witnesses, the names of whom have not been made public have been called to testify. The trial will not last more than two or three days. Bulgarian buttermilk, refreshing and nourishing, recommended by physicians, to be had at Price's.
