EXHIBITS TO MARK CLOSE OF SCHOOLS

Milton Pupils to Show Manual Training Work Friday Afternoon.

MILTON, Ind., April 21. The township schools close Friday afternoon. There will be an exhibit from the grades and high school pupils of the schools at Milton, Including an exhibit of domestic science, drawing and manual training at the high school room Friday afternoon. Everybody is invited to visit the exhibit. J. F. Nation of Muncie was at Doddridge chapel Tuesday to look after the light plant, which is out of order. The Rev. F. M. Westhafer accompanied him. Miss Margaret Conway and Mrs. Richard Thornton of Cambridge City were here Tuesday. Carl Williams was at Connersville Tuesday. Members of the town board and the Boosters' club were at Cambridge City Tuesday in the interest of town improvements at Milton. The Boys' Drum corps held a rehearsal Monday evening.

SMALLPOX EPIDEMIC GRIPS NEW CASTLE

NEW CASTLE, Ind., April 21 With thirty cases of small pox reported in this city, Dr. J. N. Hurty, secretary of the state board of health, will arrive Thursday to make an investigation.. Dr. Hurty said If conditions were as bad as reported New Castle citizens would have to choose between vaccination and "small pox. The Henry county grand jury yesterday began a probe of the situation and will return indictments, it is said, if any of the health officials are found to have been negligent.

NEW PARIS. O., April 21. Miss Evelyn Aker entertained Friday evening a party of nine girl friends who came dressed as small children. Games and music were the features of the evening and a dainty lunch was served to Misses Marvel Mitchell, Harriet McKeon, Hester Nelson, Helen, Dorothy and Marguerite Kessler, Maude Watts, Salena Raney and Helen Reid.

DITCHES MACHINE TO MISS CHILDREN CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind., April 21. As Dr. J. E. Wright was driving his machine near the Medsker home, some children came coasting down the bill. The doctor saw at a glance that an accident could scarcely be averted, but at once drove his machine to the side of the road, breaking a wheel, but otherwise escaping injury.

OILING OF STREETS POSTPONES DEBATE CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind., April 21. Owing to the oiling of the streets in that part of town, the debate which was to have been given Friday evening at the home of Mrs. Ed Copeland by the Loyal Woman's Bible class of the Christian church, has been postponed until a later date.

TURKS REST EASY AFTER BOMBARDMENT

CONSTANTINOPLE, via Berlin and Amsterdam, April 21 Recent Turkish successes at- the Dardanelles have removed the anxiety apparent here when the first allied attacks were made against the strait's forts. According to the war office, eight of warships of the Anglo-French fleet have been damaged or sunk since the allies opened their bombardment, and five others have been less seriously damaked. The forts, on the contrary, are declared to have . suffered only minor damage, practically all of which has been repaired.

MARION, Ind.. . April 21 The throes of a wet and dry campaign are tightening about this city. Wet leaders are circulating a petition asking that the county commissioners set a date for the election. Dry sentiment is stronger than ever before, many former wet leaders having announced their intention of supporting the antisaloon cause. If wet leaders are successful in having an election called, it is believed they will lose at the polls.

THIRTY-NINE BOYS TAKE EXAMINATIONS

The first -of the-international examination in Bible study conducted by the religious work department of the Y. " M." C. A.,' was held last night for local classes at the high school building. Thirty-nine of the fortyseven boys composing the classes took the examination. Questions asked dealt with the "Travels of Paul" and were answered by the Leaders' class and Iroquois classes one, two and three.

Brothers and sisters of Charles Wfckett, eight miles north of Richmond, met with him Sunday to celebrate his twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. In the family were eight children, four boys and. four girls. The youngest is now 53 and the eldest 67. There has never been a death in the family. Those present Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Ben Hill, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Wickett, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin W. Wickett, Mary W. Wickett and Mrs. Elizabeth Candler.

TO ATTEND FUNERAL.

Hermania lodge, Daughters of Rebekah will meet Wednesday evening at the lodge rooms at 7:30 o'clock to attend the funeral of Sister Ashen-felter.

MIKESELL APPLIES FOR BAND LEADER

EATON, O., , April 21. Frank , W. Mikesell of Richmond Ind., is an applicant for the position of director of the Commercial club band to succeed Prof. J. W. Young, resigned. Mikesell met with band members in rehearsal and is said to have made a favorable impression. Mikesell is a son of William Mikesell of Richmond, but was born and reared in Eaton. The mat. ter of the selection of a director will later be taken up by the club.

MAYOR OF CHICAGO ABJURES ALCOHOL CHICAGO, April 21. Official announcement was made today that William Hale Thompson, mayor-elect of Chicago, has gone on the water wagon. William N. Pelouze, his brother-in-law, said that the executive-elect never drank to excess, but that now he would forsake all sorts of alcoholic drinks.

GOVERNOR SILENT ON CLUB PETITION

' Governor Ralston or his secretary has failed to take any action as yet on the request of the': Commercial club that a commissioner be appointed from Eastern Indiana to act with the general commission from all states to fix the route of the Dixie highway. As the governor has already appointed two commissioners.-the allotted number from Indiana, Thomas Taggart and Carl Fisher, no hope is given by Secretary Haas that it will be possible to exert any influence to have the Dixie highway follow the National road from

AMBASSADOR GETS LEAVE OF ABSENCE

WASHINGTON, April 21 Ambassador Guthrie has sailed from Japan for tht United States, Secretary of State Bryan stated' today. The ambassador had been given leave of absence because of the illness of Mrs. Guthrie in Pittsburg.

MAENNERCHOR READY FOR BIG SAENGERFEST

The Maennerchor is 'practicing for the annual Saengerfest of Southeastern Ohio and Kentucky, which is to be held at Newport, Ky., June 20, and will bring together 516 singers to sing the chorus numbers. About 8,000 persons are expected to attend the contest. Prof. Geyer of Newport, was here Sunday listening to a rehearsal of the songs which will be sung in the" contest.
