matter how hardened the heart or how soured the life by the flings of fortune or the disloyalty of friends, a tenderness that will not be denied will gradually take possession of all who view these films, and eyes will be dimmed by a moistness that many will seek to hide from those who know them. In the role of Zoe Ballentyne, grownup. Miss Edna Mayo will win many friends. In several strong emotional scenes she appears as if really living the part. In . that scene, especially, where she reads the tattered scroll on which the boy "Tubby" had declared his undying love, we catch sight of big tears as they drop in sacred memory. These scenes are in strong contrast to those other scenes which reveal Zoe in determined and defiant moods. TUESDAY. "The White Goddess" Mystery enshrouds Elsie Farnim. Brought to this country when an infant by the matron of Jordan university. Once a year. Khanda appears to pay for Elsie's tuition. Three weeks after the girl has promised to marry Elwin Gordon, Khanda arrives. He informs the girl that she is to return to Indiana immediately. A sense of foreboding causes Elsie to whisper a request to Elwin that he follow her to the Orient. But the young man's presence is discovered just as the liner near its destination. Assisted by his servants, Khanda hurls Elwin into the sea. Although Elsie is led to believe that she is about to meet her parents, it develops that the girl has been educated at the expense of the worshipers of the Temple of Larmar, by whom she is regarded as the "White Goddess." Fishermen save Elwin and he searches for Elsie. In the meantime, Hassa Dal, the high priest informs her of the terrible fate which had overtaken her parents. Later Elwin saves her from the same fate. The incidents leading up to this make the "White Goddess" a remarkable film. FRIDAY. "The Enemies" On his return to his ship. Little Straw . Wife" at Arcade, Lyric Films SUNDAY. "Wild Irish Rose" Cleo Madison is the star in this film. The theme of "Wild Irish' Rose," a Gold Seal tworeel drama recalls in many of its details the tragic romance of the great English author, William Makepeace Thackeray. Thackeray married early in lifa and soon after, his wife went hopelessly, insane. The author never married afterward arid during his life paid sad pilgrimages to his demented bride. Although feted in both America and the British Isles wherever he went and encouraged by some of the wealthiest women in both countries, Thackeray never took much interest in women thereafter. His sorrow tinged all his works. In "Wild Irish Rose," a young Irish nobleman's wife goes insane soon after her marriage. , Living strictly up to the laws of his church, the young lord refuses to marry again, although in love with a charming lass. For years he faithfully attends his , insane wife and only turns to the lass, who loves him, when his wife dies at last in delirium. TUESDAY. "The Troubadour" with Murdoc MacQuarrie and Agnes Vernon are the stars. It has been the habit of directors in producing Mexican plays to cast the poor peon south of the Rio Grande in the villan's role. The. kindly side of the Spanish don and peon has been ignored. Murdock MacQuarrie in producing "The Troubadour," has . endeavored to present another and more lovable side of the Mexican character. "The Troubr-iour," in short, tells the story of a Mexican troubadour, whose sweetheart is stolen from him by a gringo from The States:. The Gringo, a bully, deserts her and her baby and, when The Troubadour discovers his 'Beating It Back" Shows at Murray Tuesday, Wednesday Al J. crime, - has htm ; arrested under the Mann White Slave Act. The Troubadour is finally cleared by the young mother who tearfully explains to a compassionate Jury the true story of her sorrow, v WEDNESDAY. "The Bombay Buddha" shows Hobart ' Henley and ; Frances Nelson. Master of the last-line punch, O.' Henry would chuckle appreciatively if he had lived to see "The Bombay Buddha," a three-reel Imp mystery masterpiece. '.'The Bombay Buddha" starts out with mystry, it tells a story in which the principals, fight a three-cornered battle and it ends with a smashing denouement which gains strength because of Its totally unexpected nature. ' In the unraveling of the tangled skein "hero" and "heroine" turn out to be villians, a keen detective is puzzled and the swarthy-skinner Hindus, who abduct the "hero" and "heroine" turn out to be only the secondary accomplices in a double crime.

In the face of competition from English, Franch and Russian agents in this country the Universal has purchased recently several big seige guns, three gross of .15 centimeter shells; 17 rapid-fire Nordenfelt and Maxim rapidfire machine guns; four French "seventy-fives," and guns and ammunition enougn to equip eight regiments. Sapping and mining tools, two military aeroplanes, grenade catapults, 200 coils of barbed wire and one armored motor-car also have been purchased in the last month. When- it came time to stage the great battle scenes in "The Doorway of Destruction," in which an army of British regiments attack a Sepoy stronghold, letters and telegrams were sent to all these ex-soldiers to report at Universal City.
