"A Man and His Wife"
John Hamilton Leaves Wife for Club and Is Welcomed by His . Old Friends.
By Virginia Terhune Van de Water. CHAPTER III. . Isabel Hamilton controlled with difficulty the inward start with which she heard her husband announce his intention of going to his club. "Why, John," she faltered, trying to look as If she did not care, "you have not been in the habit pf going to the club since our marriage. I did not suppose you even thought of it." "No, I have neglected it," he re marked gravely. I've been thinking the matter over, and I've come to the conclusion that I have no right to belong to an organization unless I show some Interest in it and meet its members once in a while. Some of the fellows there are my very good friends, and I could hardly blame them if they feel hard toward me for my seeming indifference." "Why haven't you gone before?" his wife asked. Her manner had changed from the silent disapproval that had characterized it during dinner. She wanted to force him to state that he had found her society more attractive than that of all the men in the world. John smijed easily. "I suppose for the same reason," he repliedd, "that most men when they replied, "that most men when they friends. Life is changed for them, and marriage is the biggest thing in the world." "And later it becomes of less importance? his wife inquired with a touch of bitterness. "Not at all," John demurred.-"While we are on this subject, let me explain, and then there will be no hard feelings about the matter. When people are first married, they are absorbed in the newness of it all, their own society, their new home, each other's perfections. At last when there are no more surprises for them, they settle down to quiet, sensible existence in which they love each other just the same per haps more but yet are not so selfish that they can- not understand that there are no other people In the world who have some claim on them." He Thinks He Has Made It Clear. "I see," said the wife. John Hamilton told himself that he had made the case plain and had told the truth. Yet in his soul he knew that he had not tOld it all, and that had his wife been her bright, cheery self this evening he would not remembered his duty to his club. But she was evidently in a bad humor, and when a woman was peeved and quiet the club was jollier than home no matter how much he loved the woman. Naturally he could not explain this to Isabel. Yet, If he had. It might have been a salutary thing for her. If more wives were told these facts they might understand before it is too late. And if more men knew that to keep a woman's affections it Is advisable occasionally to show her loverly attentions, men might not have to complain of wives' fiekleness. Both sexes love to be loved, and both like to be amused. John's statement that he was going to his club gave Isabel a sudden sinking of the heart, but her pride combined with her temper to make her Ichlflt InfUmed BuslonsX and Kocb-Jolof Tells Positive Cure For All Foot Troubles Science has proven that nearly all foot troubles originate from a common cause; that of injured tissues.- The following Information will be welcomed by thousands of victims of daily foot torture. She tried to look indifferent and she hummed a little tune to herself as she went into the parlor and picked up a, book. ."What are you going to do with yourself this evening?" asked John. Her failure to make further comment on his speech suddenly produced in him a sensation of insecurity. Did her silence mean acquiescence or dlsnlopsurp' "Oh, I shall be well enough," she said. "I have an interesting book, and plenty to do. I am never lonely." "That's good," the husband remarked. Her indifferent attitude piqued him, even while he congratulated himself that it made his departure easier. As he went towards his club he reflected that he had taken the step that meant his right to dispose of his time as he wished. Of course be loved Isabel dearly, but she certainly knew how to be disagreeable when she was in the mood she had been in tonight. He had done all that could be expected towards conciliating her and she would not be conciliated. He certainly would not apologize for what he had said at breakfast that morning, for he had not been in the wrong. This was a side of his wife's character he had .never, seen ibef ore, and he would not humor- her by staying at home trying to cajole her. If she was going to be grouchy and glum, be would go where things were pleasanter that's all. This was a man's prerogative. It was strange that women did not understand that. He is Warmly Welcomed at the Club. He had kissed Isabel 'good-night, and she had the good sense this time to let him kiss her on the lips, but she had not returned the kiss. Oh, well! Why worry about It! She would get over her huff, and then his home would be once more the jolly little retreat it had been for the past Six months. He had reached his club by this time, and the greeting that he received from some of his old friends assembled there warmed his heart and made him consider himself a fool for having stayed away so long. He would not be so forgetful and neglectful g"Now that my wife and I are actually settled In our home," he told a chum of his bachelor days, who chanced to happen in, "I mean to run over here often just as I used to." His companion laughed. "They all come to that Jack, after they've been married a while," he observed. "My brother did, and I watched him do it. It raised-somewhat of a dust when he started in at the club again, but his wife soon got use to it. And yours will, too." The color mounted to John Hamilton's forehead. "My wife," he said, proudly, "is not the kind to 'raise a dust,' as you put it. She and I understand each other perfectly. She is always glad to have me go anywhere that 1 want to go. She Is a sensible, broad-minded woman, George." "I cangratulate you," his friend said dryly. Something In the tone made John Hamilton look at his keenly and wonder If George really believed him.
