DEMAND STANDARD SCHEDULE OF PAY FOR JOBLESS MEN Charity Leaders Will Refuse to Supply Labor at Reduced Rates Because Persons Need Work. "I will not supply working people for less than standard wages and It is an imposition on the public for a well-to-do man to cut five cents an hour off of a man's wages just because he has been out of work and has to work for anything he can get," said Secretray Melpolder of the Central Charity bureau. It i has been learned recently that
some of the citizens who called at the bureau for persons to do odd jobs,
Irefuse to pay 20 cents an hour, the
oramary wage paid at tnis time ior such work. Hereafter persons who have called for help in the past and cut the men's wages to 15 and sometimes 10 cents an hour will be refused unless they agree to Qy the standard wage. "I had a case yesterday of a man who is considered wealthy, who asked for a man to do some odd jobs," the bureau secretary explained. "I sent him a good workman who has a family to support. The workman was told to ask 20 cents an hour for his work. The man insisted that he would' not pay more than fifteen because there are plenty of workingmen out of work who will take the job at that figure."
Some 12 per cent of the total number of adult railway employes, in the United Kingdom, representing not less than 70,000 men, are n'ow serving with the colors.
