Our Athletic Policy Wrong?
On various occasions the Journal of the Amer
lean JMedical Association has entered a protest Against .the widespread tendency in the United
,tates toward the. extension of competitive ath5 etics in schools. "
3
4
These contentions, it says, aresnared by Eu-
ropean authorities to whom the "question of persmitting students of various ages to engage in competitive sports has been submitted by the
f Prussian government. In order to discover un-
J developed athletic '"talent" among the students
a of the high schools and universities of the Ger-
n man empire; in anticipation of their being train-
: -j ed for, the projected Olympic games, competitive ' I era ma a warp rrrnnseH under the auSDices of ath-
- r - r . . . . ,. 53 letic' associations hi many places. The participants were to be students without previous athletic training. The events were to include swimSi ming matches, running and jumping contests, S3 and numerous other exercises. Although it was jy assumed that such contests would increase apjpj pronation of the importance of physical exer-
: 3 cise, the intent of the plan was to discover prom-
jit ising candidates. .The plan was submitted to the
nhvsiolocrist Rubner and the clinician Kraus, pro-
k k M" mJ Z
f fessors in the University of Berlin. In their reijport they -contend that any system of athletics 3 which finds its best expression in competition, fjA and has as its :chief end the development of athII letic supremacy, fails to meet the real hygienic
needs of youth and to serve for the proper per
fection of the body: . ' '
"The conclusions of Rubner. and Kraus .are
hot only to be endorsed, but deserve widespread publication, as sane judgments of competent ob
servers," declares the Journal.
While the esteemed Medical Journal may indorse the views of these two German authorities, it is doubtful if the American public will, as a whole; share in this view. ' ' "Competition," the desire for athletic suopinioh, is responsible for the wholesome love of healthful sports shared by the people of. the two great English speaking countries, the United Staies and Great Britain. ' ; "Competention " the desire for athletic ; supremacy, causes thousands of American youths
each year to try their skill in baseball, football,
frnnlr and field events, eolf. tennis arid other
sports too numerous to mention, and the health-
giving, out-of-door exercise they obtain from their fanatical devotion to -'their 'games ;is certainly nothing if not beneficial to themselves and the nation. The English youth is as devoted to his sports as his Yankee cousin and his competition-inspired love of out-of-doors exercise has stood him in good stead during his long days of disease-breeding duty in the trenches on the firing line. Patience subservience to discipline, pluck, initiative, and, above all else, hardihood, are the fruits of the young Britisher's devotion to his cricket and his football. "I saw a detachment of Belgian troops enroute to the rear after a week's duty in the trenches," writes a war correspondent." "Their heads were down, they barely dragged themselves along the road. They were the personification of utter exhaustion. Then I saw a force of English troops, also just released from a long period of trench duty. Their heads were high, their uniforms spick and span and they were also freshly shaven. They marched with
the swinging stride of athletes and their spirits
were as high as their eyes were bright. They slept like logs that night, but they were at their football bright and early the next day."

JURY GET MANN WHITE SLAVE CASE CHICAGO, March 31. The case of Dr. Louis T. Wineburg, of LIgonier, Ind., went to the jury this afternoon; after argument on the question of whether the physician was guilty of violating the Mann white slave law was concluded, and Federal Judge Carpenter read his instructions to the jury. The appearance of pimples, bolls, skin eruptions and all evidence of Impure blood, calls for S. S. K . the famous blood purifier. Cathartics, purges, bowel movers and laxatives .won't do. No amount of bile will destroy certain germs which cause blood and skin eruptions. They are away down deep la the tissues, perhaps In the very marrow of the bones. And such a condition calls for the searching influence of S. S. S. It is indeed a remarkable remedy, since it Is taken up by the blood stream and never loses its medicinal influence. On and on It goes, through and through the entire system and always with Ihe same definite action to dislodge germs, destroy their activity and stimulate the liver, lungs, kidneys, bowels . and skin to throw them out completely. It stimulates stagnant blood, provides a rational exhilaration to the nerve centers and thereby the natural functions of the body are aroused to cast out intruders, no matter how strongly Intrenched they may be. It refutes the ancient theory that to destroy within us ttlo germs that eat Into our Tltals calls for drugs that destroy our very existence. Get a bottle of S. CARUSO WorU'famouM Tenor, aaytt "Tuxedo completely satisfies my to bacco taste. It is mild and has a delicious flavor. Most important of all, from a singer's standpoint, Tuxedo does not irritate my throat."
"Tuxedo Does Not Irritate My Throat" The non-irritating quality of Tuxedo which. Caruso praises is due to the original "Tuxedo Process''' by which the tobacco
is treated. This process . refines the tobacco and absolutely removes
