NATIONAL ROAD BOOSTERS CALL FOR EXERCISES
The following official call has been Issued by the National Old Trail association:: Whereas, For many years after the povernment was established. It per Vetulty and preservation was a grave problem. As an Inducement to the tatea lying west of the Alleghenles to Join the Union, the government promised, as early as 1803, that If the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri would do so the government would build a national highway from tide water, on the east and extending through' the -west; and thereupon an act was passed by congress in 1806 and approved " by Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, establishing the . old National road aa a national highway, Its pun pose being declared to be "to cement the states and thus preserve the Union." For fully forty years this policy was adhered to, -and congress, In turning the road back to some of the etates through which it ran, expressly retained the right to resume control and management whenever it saw fit; end It did more perhaps, than any other one thing to permanently establish and preserve the Union; and
Whereas, The people have now J
Highly resolved to re-bulld and re-dedicate the old National road to the end that the original purpose of its conception may be preserved and fulfilled. . Now, therefore, we call upon the people of every county through which the National Old Trails road extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific, to hold a -National Old Trails Memorial Fourth of July Celebration . In 1915. and thus ratify the establishment and preservation of the American Union, to which patriotic purpose the old road contributed so materially. As a part of such memorial celebration we respectfully. request that all schools and colleges, civic,-commercial and patriotic organizations of every character thall unite and make this the grandest and most enthusiastic red letter day in the nation's history. J. M. LOWE, President, National Old Trails Road Association.

IIAfJDLEY PUTS EAM.IIAf.1 CASE UP TO BUREAU
o Incidents connected with transfer ing the postmastershlp of Earlham colleg to the civil service, Involving the charge that President R. I Kelly of Earlham, has attempted to discourage people competing against the Institution's own candidate for the appointment, Edgar Fisher, have been reported to the post ' office . department by Lawrence Handler, superintendent of carriers of the local post office and local civil service agent. That the civil service bureau will order an investigation of the case is anticipated. . Flnley Newlln, treasurer, of Earlham, has been the college postmaster. He Is prevented from taking the civil service examinations by the age limit. The office of college treasurer has been maintained with little expense to the Institution. By combining the offices of treasurer, and postmaster the government has practically paid all of Mr. Newlin's salary. It was desired by President Kelly to have Mr. Fisher, purchasing agent for the college, secure the postmastershlp. He could appoint Mr, Newlln his deputy and Fisher's salary as postmaster
could, as heretofore,' he applledto Mr. Newlin's salary. it was learned today that some time ago the post office department considered closing toe Earlham post office and establish a rub station of the Richmond post office at the college President ' Kelly notified - the government that under such an arrangement a rental of $60 a month would be charged for the room used aa the post office, which would almost equal what the government paid the Earlham postmaster last year. . esssBBaeksBHBBMSMaMMae-Msea Wanted Competent house man. 115 North 10th st -
