FREEZING WEATHER SAVES FRUIT CROP BUT HURTS WHEAT Farmers Expect Heavy Yield of Apples Contrasted With Last Year's Product Thaws and Freezes. The weather of the last two weeks has been both favorable and unfavorable from the- standpoint of the farmers. It has probably been the salvation of 'the fruit' crop, as the warm weather toward the latter part of February, had caused the buds to swell to such an extent that few more days would have been sufficient to burst them, and one freezing night would have nipped the fruit crop for this year. The cold weather came again soon enough to check the progress of the buds, and from all reports received fruit prospects are good. Following the poor crop of last year a big yield of apples is expected this year, and the trees In most of the orchards show numerous fruit buds. It would seem that more farmers are spraying their orchards for San Jose scale this spring, than in the past and there has been an unusual demand for the lime sulphur solution, at local supply houses. The thawing and freezing of the last few weeks has probably done more damage to the wheat and young alfalfa, than the severe winter weather. The freezing and thawing of the soil each day produces contraction and expansion which leaves the young plants out of the soil, and exposes the crowns to the air, and the freezing of the night does a considerable amount of damage. Plowing has been uninterrupted to any great extent, and most farmers report their sod ground all plowed. Many are planting oats, especially in the northwestern part of the county where most of the Wayne county oats crop is produced.
WITH HOGS SCARCE PRICES GO UPWARD
Trading at Glen Miller Yards Resumes More Steady Tone.
Although there has been a substantial increase in the price of hogs with in the last ten days, few farmers have any market hogs left, and are not able to take advantage of the better prices. After holding out for $7 hogs all winter, farmers were forced by the near approach of spring work to clean up their marketable animals, with the result that the bulk of hogs were cashed in, and now with hogs scarce the price has reached the $7 mark in less than a week. The local cattle trade is steady, with only moderate offerings at the prices which have prevailed throughout the winter. , Best steers bring 7 cents, but not many have been fed this winter, owing to the trouble in getting feeders last fall. There is good demand for milk cows and this will be almost doubled in the next month, but the supply is limited, and desirable animals are hard , to find at any price.
WHEAT SHOWS JUMP IN CHICAGO MARKET
CHICAGO, March 23. There were
sharp upturns in the wheat Market today, the resting spot showing an advance of 24 to 3ic, which may be the strongest of the list. There were additional rumors of big takings of flour by the Dutch government, and there were rumors of big takings of wheat at the seaboard. These reports were bullish factors and drove many shorts to cover, while the offering; were held tightly. Corn closed at to c higher, and oats were up c. Hog products were fractionally better.
