VOTE OF COUNCIL ' CONTROVERSY
SENDS LIGHT TO WORKS BOARD
Whether there shall or shall not be a street lamp at the. corner of South Fifth and D streets is a question which almost caused two property owners living in that neighborhood to come to blows in the presence of the board of public works members last. week. The board had moved the light from midway between South D and E streets to the corner of D street in compliance with a recommendation of council. Then a petition came in to have the lamp tTansfered back to its former location and the board referred the petition to council. Last night council referred tbe petition back to the board by a vote of 7 to 5. Cites Hospital Site. Councilman Waidele last night sug gested the purchase of a small strip of ground bordering Cleer creek near where the detention hospital is locat
ed. He said the hospital could be
moved to this location and the city could then make use of the extensive gravel bed on the present site. He
said improvements to the , hospital were badly needed. He objected to the proposal of locating the hospital on Newman's Hill. Petitions were filed ; for locating street lights at North Eleventh, and J streets, South Twenty-third and A streets, South Seventh and J streets, South Seventh and L streetB and Northwest Seventh and Pearl streets. Councilman Steinbrink demanded that the public service corporations be required to fix up satisfactory holes dug in parkways between sidewalks and curbs. - The following report of the city's finances for last month was read and approved: , v Cash on hand, Feb. 1 . .$ 7,718.4' Receipts; 6,674.0.
