Mexico
When President Wilson withdrew General
Funston's brigade and the supporting warships
from Vera Cruz there remained only moral suas
ion as a weapon to overawe the brawling patriots
in Mexico. The strain upon moral suasion has never been greater since the American disem
barkation than it is today. Mr. Ouval West,
latest personal envoy to the Mexican bedlam, is
even now trying to save the pieces. He has in
terviewed Francisco Villa, and will soon be on his way to sound Emiliano Zapata in the fastnesses of Morelos, though if Alvaro Obregoa shakes the dust of the city of Mexico from his feet, Mr. West
may have his audience with Zapata in the capi
tal. Afterward he is to see Carranza and tap him
for intentions and guaranties.
Snapshots of New Paris
But what in the world can Mr. West or any
other man accomplish for moral suasion ? Gen
eral Villa is a law unto himself, and blows hot or blows cold as it suits him.1 The old gentleman
stroking his whiskers in state at Vera Cruz is
utterly unmanageable. At heart he is anti-American, and, like the fretful porcupine, he bristles at the slightest provocation. His - lieutenants share his antipathy to all foreigners, particularly Americans. General Obregon, who has been paraded as of the better order of patriot and a man of parts, is turning out badly. ; Moral suasion was barely strong enough to cancel his levy on "foreign business" in the city of Mexico. But the Carranza General has since rebuffed, a relief committee of foreign residents who were concerned about the alarming destitution of the common people in the city of Mexico, and he has threatened to evacuate the capital at. the first
sign of rioting and leave the . merchants to the!
mercy of the mob. ,S ; ; - f - ' '; - ' The ugly fact is that the military authorities,!
and not the merchants, are responsible for condi-t
tions bordering on anarchy m the city -of Mexico,
Liberal contributions for . the poor have been
made by banks and private firms, but railroad
traffic has been suspended, ;with the result -that food supplies are not coming into ' the city:
Zapata managed things much better during his brief administration. If the capital , is on ,the verge of famine, the rioting' General Obregon
threatens the merchants with would no doubt be
gin with his departure. Only quick occupation of
the city by one of General Villa s lieutenants could save it from anarchy. New York Sun.

Tuesday Club Meeting Full of Interest and Varied by Several Comedy Features.
NEW PARIS, O., March 12. The extra meeting of the Tuesday club held Wednesday evening at the library proved a delightful affair. The room was decorated in the club colors of red, white and blue. The regular meeting was held on the main floor of the library after which the members went to the gallery where supper was served. The table was lighted with candles, several of the holders being very old. Carnations ornamented the center of the table. The repast served -vas in the form of a "dish" supper, and each member was not to uncover her dish until all were seated. To play a prank on the committee in charge the remaining members brought "fake" supper portions and after the committee had recovered from their fright, the real supper was carried In from a nearby . house. The "fake" dishes consisted of chicken feed covered with browned crumps to denote scalloped corn, mustared coved with a layor of cotton for "float," powdered brick for salmon, etc. Other comedy features were also worked in and a jolly time enjoyed. The club which has been studying Shakespeare this year was presented with a sepia sketch of Anna Hathaway'B cottage by Mrs. Mary Murray Fanning of Boston, a former New PariB girl. The sketch is framed in mission style and hangs in the library. William H. Marshall made a business trip to Lima and St, Marys, O., Monday and Tuesday. HELP WANTED. Did you ever answer, or think about answering a "help wanted" advertisement? Nearly every American boy and girl who wants a job or expects to work for a salary, is keenly eager to know what sort of a man the "first boss" will be. Jack Lalt, who wrote that amazingly successful play "Help Wanted" has unveiled many of the mysteries which lie back of these "help wanted" ads., in a manner that is inescapably humorous and at the same time genially wise. The play comes to the Gennett tonight. iT'S A LONG WAY TO TIPPERARY. In his production of William Anthony McGuires story entitled, "It's A Long Way "'o Tipperary," Gus Hill has given the play going public a war drama without a line or action contrary to our national laws of neutrality. It is as thrilling as "Shenandoah" and as Irish as "Arrah-Na-Pogue." It is coming to the Gennett next Tuesday, March 16.
