"Smoldering Fires." J. Warren Ker
rigan stars as the boy in this drama. Many a child has been cowed and brow-beaten In early years until at maturity little of individual initiative remains. Fear of the dark, of the unkuown, of one's superiors, or religious fetichs, of the law and other things less substantial, have made many men spineless creatures, who elink through life like criminals down a dark alley. There is no gainsaying the fact that to smother a child's initiative until it is afraid to raise its head In the presence of "company," to discourage Its efforts to depend upon itself in all the minor emergencies of early years,' Is almost criminal. If the boy cringes at the thought of personal attack let him play football. If the boy next door "picks on" him, encourage him to go out anri lambast said boy next door. Jacques Jaccard, producer of the Victor company, has based a two-reel western drama on this theme. True, he has enlarged upon It and developed it, but the fundamental idea remains. J. Warren Kerrigan enacts the role of a boy who has grown to maturity almost afraid to call his soul his own. Kicked and suflfed and browbeaten as a child, the boy finally wanders, a bit of human driftwood, to a western town.

TUESDAY. "The Recoil." Edna Maison and Ray Gallagher feature in this film. "A new broom sweeps clean" is an old aphorism, but applies with as much timeliness in these modern days as it did a hundred years ago. ed social elect spend most of their ; time in gambling at bridge. The dis- j trict attorney's daughter is one of the offenders, but to tell her that she;
was placing herself in a class with the common gambler by playing bridge would insult her. To even hint at such a thing would have been an unpardon able thing to do. a most reprehensible breach of "good form." WEDNESDAY.
