In the February American Magazine Ida M. Tarbell continues her series of business articles entitled "The Gold Rule in Business." In the present article she takes up the subject of wages, in the course of which tells the story of a Brooklyn drop-forging company, founded by James H. Williams. Mr. Williams' factory grew from the smallest of its kind in the United Stated to the largest. His idea was that it is chiefly 'the employe who make a business, successful and not the proprietors or the banks or the tariff or the rebates: Accordingly he paid high wages and in other ways developed the men who worked for

Afa other Story of a Series Concerning Unusual and-Dramatic Experiences . of Well Known Richmond People.
Written by W. How he was nearly killed at a colored "social" by an infuriated rowdy, following a series of serio-comic incidents In rapid and strenuous sequence, and how, after it was all over, he laughed himself sick, is a favorite story in' the long list of interesting experiences of one of the veteran members of e police department. First Ser geant Edward McNally. You have to find him in just the right humor, how. ever, to get him to tell of his experiences as a member of the police force, for McNally is not wont to talk about himself. "A case we had the other, day," remarked the sergeant not so long ago as he sat in his chair at a comfortable tilt, "reminded me of an experience I -had when I was pounding a beat. It was late one night and when I called .Into headquarters I was informed that a row was in progress at a colored 'social' in a hall in. the old Tremont block, at that time used as headquarters for the O. A. R. When I got there a free-for-all fight was budding. I did not want to Start any rough stuff myself for fear the few non-combatants might get into the melee and complicate things, so I grabbed a big and decidedly brunette colored man who appeared to be the storm center and I started to make him walk turkey across the room. He had to go at a .rapid gait to keep his balance. Our progress was suddenly terminated by colliding with a closed door, which we knocked off its hinges and it fell over on us, flooring my captive and myself. Just then some one knocked over the piano and it nearly crushed three little chaps hiding back of it and It did scare all of them white, so a stampede started. All made their departure through the exit we had knocked the door off of, and each and ever; one, men, women and children, walked over me and the big troublemaker I was clinched with. I lost count of the number of people who stepped on my face. '- "After I thought all had departed I .arose with my almost dead captive and started down the main stairway. As 1 shoved him onto the street and got half way out of the building someone threw a heavy chair down the stairway, hitting the doors with such force that when they flew out they struck me and hurled me and the fellow I was holding onto the middle of Eighth street. - I was pretty near all ECONOMIZE ON

' One hundred residents of Richmond will have a chance to get a 50c bottle (but only one to each family) of Schiffniann's Concentrated Expectorant at half price, at Clem Thistlethwaite's drug stores today and tomorrow only, but remember on these days only. With a view to giving those who have not yet used this excellent remedy an opportunity of trying it, the proprietor and Clem Thistlethwaite's drug stores have decided to reduce the price so as to give the first 100 applying a regular 50c bottle for 25c. by presenting the coupon below. Even though not in need of a medicine at the present time, it will pay you to take advantage of this opportunity, as some remedy is quite sure to be required before the winter is over, but this remedy can not be obtained at half price again. This latest method of supplying a remedy in such strongly concentrated form, where you buy all pure medicine in small bottles is more economical. Instead of buying, to break up a cold or cough, several bottles of oldfashioned, ready-made remedies, containing only a small quantity of real medicine and a large proportion of sugar and water, also paying for bottles,

system was highly; and justly, unpopular; but Mr. Williams jn introducing it made -it an 'ironclad rule that the two practices which had made it bade repute should never be allowed in his shop. In the first place, the regular day's wage was guaranteed, whatever the man's output. In the second place, hjs piece work rate was never to be cut,' whatever the conditions; if it was ten cents a piece, ten cents it should remain. v 'You may earn all you can and the more it is the better we shall like it.' A class in agriculture has been added to the curriculum of Earlham college, under the direction,, of prof. David W. Dennis. During the present term the work has been of an elementary nature, covering general agricultural topics as designated in Warren's book of Agriculture. Some labaratory work has been done, such as the testing of seeds and sail, and germination work. Officials of the school feel that this is a distinctive step as Earlham is one of the first schools in the state to take up this line of work outside of Purdue university. " It is thought that the time is not far distant- when a teacher's training course in agriculture will be added to the catalog as the state requirements for teachers are being broadened to inelude normal training in agriculture and domestic science. The work o the class 'will be continued during the next term, and a study of livestock, and agricultural bacteriology will be taken up. In preparation for this work, A. D. Cobb, lectured before the class yesterday on Dairy Cattle. The. class includes fifteen men, all of whom" are interested in farming. Get reserved seats for Muncie Polo game at Coliseum. Admission 25c. running the smallest business of the kind in the country, to pay , high wages, One -of his chief concerns as the business grew was to see that the men were getting enough all that they earnedv Again and again a man was called in and told that something had been added to his wages because
it. But the reverse was never
true, that' is, the pay was never cut below what was a day's wage. "But Mr. - Williams was not satisfied with the operation of the fixed daily wages. 'He believed
