FANCIER TELLS HOW TO GROOM BIRD FOR SHOW Lou Zeller Washes Fowls With Soap and Drys Them Over Lamp Silk Cloth Gives Polish.
The casual observer at the Poultry show, seldom realizes the time and trouble taken by the owners to put their birds in condition for the show room. The majority of the passersby stop longest In front of the white fowls, exclaim over their beauty, and say, "Now If I were rasing chickens, those are the kind I'd have because they are so white and clean." Perhaps if they knew how that spotless appearance was obtained they would change their minds. Frank Karquahar came Into the show room Monday morning with three white birds. He came to an impressive halt before a group of fanciers, and raising his hand said, "I want you boys to witness that if I ever wash another chicken, I want to be sent to jail for 30 days, and fiined $100." They were the first birds he had ever washed, and as a result of inexperience he had received most of the water himself. Zeller Explains Washing. Lou Zeller of Milton, who is showing White Orpingtons, delivered an tepromptu lecture last night to a number of interested novices, on his method of preparing the birds for the show. "I hold the birds," said Zeller, "and my wife washes them. We first wash the face and comb with suds, and then rub soap into the feathers, always rubbing away from the head, to avoid breaking any quills. When we have ;i uood lather, and the dirt softened, vc rub it off with a cloth and set thej :rd in a tub of water heated to about: ; degrees. I The second rinsing is given in clear j water heated to about 75 or 80 degrees, and the third tub containing j a little blueing in the water Is reduced! to about 65 degrees. The birds are, dried wits towels, and placed in a coop with a net bottom, which is set j over a reflector lamp, where they stay until dry. It takes about an I hour to get a bird ready to go in the ; drying pen. One must be careful,"' said Mr. Zeller, "to get the soap all out or the feathers will stick together when they dry." During the show Mr. Zeller rubs corn starch into the feathers to keep them white until after the judging is done. The birds are polished with a; t-ilk rag to make them shine. i THIRTY WILL ASSESS Township Assessor Howarth is preparing to employ a force of thirty a-ist-ssors and office helpers to undertake the assessment of real estate and personal property in Wayne township. The usual force is fifteen to eighteen, but the assessing of real estat" this year requires the increased 1;mt. "I "ill keep many of the former as- : osi-ors," Mr. Ilowarth aid. "Only ili' .-,e who are qualified will get jobs. 1 will have twelve men assessing real i state in Richmond, and new valuations will be placed on ali property."

BY LEASED WIRE. WASHINGTON, Jan. 15. Sir Cecil Spring-Rice, the British ambassador, today delivered to the state department a protest of the character against General Carranza's decree confiscating oil properties in the Tampico district. The British representations to the state department make it clear that the British government will not countenance the destruction of oil in this field owned by British subjects at Tampico and the United States government was urged to take drastic action toward inducing Carranza to revoke his decree. ANTI-LOBBY BILLS ENTER LEGISLATURE Both House and Senate Receive Measure to Stop Practice.
INDIANAPOLIS', Jan. 15. Radical anti-lobbying legislation was begun today in both houses of the legislature. Identical measures were introduced in the senate and house by Senator Van Aucken and Pepresentative Perry Davis. The bills attack primarily the men or organizations that accept money or for using influence for or against legislation. Also Van Auken and Davis would compel all lobbyists to register and state under oath their business, employment, matters in which they are interested, etc. Senator Eisner today introduced a measure to release from the obligation of registering all voters in rural districts whose names are already on the poll books. In cities of more than ten thousand the bill does not change the present registration law. The bill providing for the creation of a finance board in Indianapolis was believed today to have "hit the toboggan" in the senate. The bill which was a pet measure of the Indianapolis city administration, was sent by Lieutenant Governor O'Neill to the committee on cities and towns, which is headed by Senator Thornton of New Albany. The concensus of opinion is that Thornton will not be a party to any change in the present laws governing the administration of municipal affairs in Indianapolis.' LUMBER MEN MEET. Clarence H. FRENCH DRIVEN BACK ON AISNE BERLIN CLAIMS
BY LEASED WiRE-l BERLIN, Via Wireless, Jan. 15. That all the French troops on the northern bank of the Aisne, northeast of Soissons have been driven from their positions and forced to retreat to the south bank, was the chief feature of an official report from general staff headquarters Issued here this afternoon. It aid that six towns along the Aisne had been captured by the Germans. These towns are Cuffies, Crouy, Bucy-Le-Long, Missy, Vauxvot and. Vallerie. The French suffered heavy losses in the retreat that abandoned these towns to the Germans. FRENCH STATEMENT. PARIS, Jan. 15. The Germans are maintaining their terrific attack upon the French northeast of Soissons. An official statement issued here this afternoon said that the Germans succeeded in capturing St. Paul, which lies a little more than a mile northeast of Soissons, but that the French had succeeded in retaking this place. The statement also claims successes for the French troops near Lombartzyde and Becelaere, In Flanders, and the capture of German positions on the Arras-Lille highway. On the Meuse the French have destroyed pontoon bridges established by the Germans at St. Miehiel. This Is a most important success for the French as the Germans have held their positions here for many weeks, continuously threatening to drive a wedge into the French army by crossing the Meuse.
