EARLHAM STUDENTS ENJOY "TIPPERARY"

Miss Gaston Devotes Chapel Period to Story of Catchy Marching Song. The phenomenal popularity of "It's a Long Way to Tlpperary," led Miss Laura Gaston, head of the music department In Earlham college, to make It the subject of the chapel exercises Thursday morning, which were in her charge tor that day. Very few persons happen to know that this song Is an American product.

having been written by Harry Williams of Providence, who peddled it around to various well known music publishers, who unanimously declined to give it the slightest consideration. Williams took the song to London and there it was sung around the music halls, but still was only a mild success. But, through some psychological hocus-pocus, it ran like wlldfare through the trenches after some lovesick "Tommy Atkins" bawled it sentimentally between shots. Its sentiment took the fancy of the men. heart-sick and weary in the most senseless and wicked war in all history, and it has been taken up on two continents. That it should not have "caught ou" sooner seems curious since it has a tilt and swing alluring enough as the most casual can notice when played by a ragtime pianist and drummer for the ragtime dances, while the dancers sing at the top of their lungs with as much noisy effect as the Tommy Atkinses wallowing in the trenches. Miss Gaston's recital was illustrated by a party of Earlham College Glen ilub men, who sang with student abandon, giving the exercises a verve appreciated by the student audience.

Lyric Reels For Next Week

Sunday the Lyric will show "The Mystery f the Throne Room," another of "My Lady Raffles" series, in which Grace Cunard, Francis Ford and Harry Schumm enact the leading

roles. The intrigue of a small kingdom, ruled by a wilful princess, is depicted in the photo-drama. The settings are really beautiful. Francis Ford is well cast as "The International Spy," while Grace Cunard, in her devil-may-care fashion, enacts the role of a petulant, madcap princess with convincing realism. Harry Schumm, as a dashing young cavalry officer, forms the third angle of an incomparable trio of players. Tne story of the

latest installment of "My Lady Raffles."

MISS SCOTT RETURNS TO MUSIC STUDIES

"ON DESERT SANDS." Tuesday's offering at the Lyric has to do with the west. When the west was young, the government appointed, among others, Cameo Clark, a range

rider and crack shot, to scout the Mid-j die West and watch the Indians. Cameo lived in a log cabin with his i mother, whose love for her only son occupied her later years, almost to the j exclusion of everything else. From an Eastern state, John Walton, with i his wife and baby five years, travels! by prairie schooner to seek riches in; the west. He travels the desert sands !

with his wife and baby for weeks in his efforts to reach the promised land. Indian massacres and uprisings occur on his journey. One evening, while stopping for a night camp, Walton sees Indians riding over the desert in his direction. Cameo and his pals are seen riding over the desert, ever on the lookout for danger. Walter tries in vain to protect his wife and baby against the onslaught of the Indians. He is shot. The horses attached to the Walton schooner become frightened, and the little mother and her baby, seated in the wagon, have no time to escape, as the frightened horses start on the run with them.

Friday the Arcade shows "Every Inch a King." The romantic scenes of court life iu

two small European principalities, with all their intrigues of love and jealousy, are portrayed in the Essanay photodrama, "Every Inch a King." King Livian is plotting to crush the neighboring King Leofric and seize his kingdom of Vidonia. Leofric is opposed to war because of the hardship on his people, so when Livian proposes peace on condition that Leofric marry Livian's niece, Irmingarde, he agrees, although he is iu love with an American heiress, Elba Allen. Irmingarde, after being crowned queen, plots with Kevan, a spy of Livian in Leofric's court, to demand half of her husband's kingdom. Leofric dis-

covrs the plot, denounces the queen and divorces her under an ancient law. In the meantime, Elba has disappeared. The queen, who was jealous of her beauty, had sent her a poisoned fan with a note saying it was a present from the king. She was overcome by the fumes and thrown into a dungeon

while unconscious. Walton, an American newspaper man, discovers the fan and the note and accuses the king. He proves that the letter was written by the queen. The king then accuses her of her treachery and sends her to a dungeon. As the guards push her in they discover Elba and release her.

"What Will the Name B?" is the mystery film which the Palace offers January 17. From out of a great mind a moving picture serial has just been created. It is the classice of photo plays. Once in a century a genius is born a man who rises out of the ordinary and in one sublime moment reaches to the very skies. Perhaps the equal will never come again. Craig Kennedy, greatest detective of the day the creation of Arthur 11. Reev will make you marvel. Craig Kennedy has held a million readers of the Cosmopolitan Magazine spellbound lor years.
