How Rats Spread Plague.
On September 25, 1914, two plague infected rats were taken in snap traps at 1013 Magazine street, New Orleans, La. The premises situated
there, a combined stable, junk warehouse and residence, were entirely surrounded by a high
jrick wall.
Owing to the condition of the place and the
lecessity for immediate, thorough rat-proofing, the premises were vacated and ordered closed pending completion of work. The residential portion of the building was fumigated with eighty pounds of sulphur and the ?ntire premise disinfected by spraying a 2 per :ent solution of kerosene emulsion. The following morning the work of demolition was begun with the intent of thoroughly destroying rat harboring places from ground to roof. When the ground floor of the residence was removed, fifty-four rates were killed; of these twenty were plague infected. Appreciating the ease with which plague may be transmitted by the fleas from rat to man, it seems remarkable that people should have lived over such a hot bed of infection without contracting the dis
ease. This is accounted tor, because oi tne large
number of rats that accommodated the excess flea population from dead rodents. That the in
fection was of recent origin was shown by the
number of plague infected rats still alive. - It was ilke living over a volcano which was on the eve of eruption.
All evidences of a stable were removed and on the bare ground was laid the concrete floor of a thoroughly rat-proofing structure for the stock. From this floor to the ceiling of the galvanized iron feed room on the floor above no effort was spared to make the building impervious to rats seeking to gain entrance by gnawing, burrowing, climbing or jumping.
The stableman's residence was next paved m mm m tt
and tne wans niiea witn concrete to sucn a height that even the father of all rats could not
have found entrance. In the junk house, which occupied the right wing of the same building, thirty-six rats were killed, of which sixteen were plague infected. Dogs were an efficient aid in killing these. When floors were torn up, rats scattered in all direct
ions. The work of rat-proofing continued steadily and the premise was fast assuming a satisfactory
appearance when a most interesting discovery intervened. After the death of all the rats, mice were frequently seen and caught. These were being examined carefully and on October 16, 1914, one was found plague infected. The fleas which escaped death with the rats were compelled to seek other hosts and they penetrated the recess and crevices in the brick walls, which under ordinary conditions had been a safe refuge for the mice. This illustrates forcibly the necessity for "mouseproofing" as well as "rat-proofing," and this means careful attention to the most minute details when closing and filling holes or dead spaces in a building, be it of wood or stone.
