A Warning to be Heeded?
The Indianapolis News hits the nail squarely the head in sounding the following warning
to the Democratic party of Indiana: It was pointed out in The News recently that the Democratic party of Indiana would, if it identified itself with the machine, go down with it, since the machine was doomed. There are thousands of Democrats in this state who are Democrats On principle, but who will not henceforth vote to strengthen the gang that has brought the party to its present low estate. The question is whether they will, with the help of grand juries and courts, and through their own independent action, be able to free the party of the burden that now rests on it, and to rescue it from the clutches of men whose interest in the party is measured only by what they can get out of it. There must be a sharp drawing of the line if
the party is ever again in this state to win the
ty. Nor does it matter whether he is acquitted or convicted of the crime with which he is charged. So, too, the Democrats of Terre Haute ought to join hands with the Republican indeed, with all honest men in the work of crushing the influences that have so demoralized and debased the town. This is a phase of the political situation in this state that will, we have no doubt, make a strong appeal to President Wilson, whom our people are shortly to have the pleasure of welcoming to this state. What he needs, if he is to carry on his work, is not so much an indorsement of his administration, as a party with which he can work and through which he can make an appeal to the people, who are disgusted with gang politics. There js no mistaking the popular temper. In this county there were thousands of
Democrats who voted the Republican ticket, not because they had ceased to be Democrats, but because they disapproved the Bell administration, the rotten city and county primaries, the
crooked registration, and all the influences that
flowed from the local machine. And, of course, the machinists will do what they can to make it appear that opposition to them is opposition to the party, and thus to tie together the party and the machine. If they succeed the Democratic situation here will grow rapidly worse. It is bad enough now, as is shown by the sweeping of the Democratic party from power in this county. It can never hope to get back until it purifies itself. We have not quite sunk to the Terre Haute level, but we are swiftly approaching it, and under Democratic leadership which has been wholly of the gang type. It is much the same throughout the state. The record of the last legislature was such as to alienate many men from the Democratic party. And today the gangsters are themselves shivering with fear lest the people turn against the
party in 1916, when a President is to be elected. There is no more gloomy talk than that heard
The question is whether

confidence of the people. Donn Roberts, for in

not be allowed to pose as a Democratic leader, or ; the fate which these men have brought on them
to have any influence in the councils of the par- i selves shall be Shared by the party as a whole.
