PETROGRAD SAYS GERMAN DRIVES FAIL IN PURPOSE Official Dispatches, However, Admit oDgged Resistance About Cracow But Claim Success.

RUSS LINES INTACT
General Staff Moves Heavy Reinforcements Toward Korezyn to Resist Hindenburg's Assaults. BY FRANCIS LAVELLE MURRAY.
Staff Correspondent The International Newsservice. PETROGRAD, Dec. 24. Official dispatches from Warsaw and Galk'ia asport that the slegdeharr.iner drives of theAustro -German forced on the twohundred mile battle front from How (thirty-four miles southeast of Flock, near the Vistula river) to the Danajec river, have at no point pierced the Ilussian lines. Operations around Cracow are propressing, accord ins to the plans of the Russian general star, it is said, and reinforcements are being moved in vast numbers toward Korezyn (Xowe Miasto) near the junction of the Nirla mid Vistula rivers to meet the heavier pressure of Field Marshal von Hindenburg's forces in that vicinity. Fight For Cracow. Siege operations at Cracow are meeting with greater resistance than at any previous time, but Grand Duke Nicholas is sanguine that the arrival of reinforcements and fresh artillery south of the Vistula will force a retirement of the Austro-Cerinan forces. From the German operations in Poland and Galicia it is evident that the chief objective of Field Marshal von Jlindenburg is the capture of Warsaw. Sucesses over the Teutonic allies ore reported from Mlawa, from the Kida valley, from the Dunajec, from Ihe district east of Lodz and south of J,owicz (between the Bzura and Pilica rivers), from the region of Skiernie-
wice ami from the northern slopes of the Carpathians. Tells of Fighting. The Army Messenger gives the following particulars of lighting in western Galicia on Dec. lio: "The twenty-sixth division of Austrian Uiuhvchr, which advanced HMith of ToUhovo fell into an ambuscade. While this division was advancing without observing the necessary precautions our troops, who had taken up positions on a ridge paralleling tlv road, unexpectedly opened tire with machine guns. The enemy was nearly decimated, the survivors fleeing in confusion. Nearly l.rintt were left dead upon the field. Our troops also routed the 'One Hundred and Second division, capturing a large number of prisoners and several machine guns. On the night of Dec. 20 and Dec. 21. In the theatre of hostilities in western Galicia we took three cannon, seven machine guns, 4,200 privates and sixtysix officers. One of the captured officers was a major general."
