3Y LEASED WIRE.) I'KTROGRAD, Dec. 22 Great German guns aie trying to batter a way through the Russian defensive positions west of Warsaw to open a route for an advance upon the capital of Foland. The sound of the cannonade Can bo heard in Warsaw, but it is officially asserted here that the Germans advanced toward that city has been so seriously checked that it cannot be resumed for some time. The people of Warsaw are suffering as a result of the battle raging almost at their doors. German aviators in aeroplanes and Zeppelins have bombarded the city three times within a week, killing forty-two persons and Injuring as many more. Supplies of food in Warsaw are giving out, and hundreds are leaving the city. If. was admitted here today that I.owicz had been evacuated by the Russians, but before the withdrawal they destroyed all the railroad rolling 6tock that, they were unable to take to Warsaw. The city was immediately occupied by the Germans.
