child who received a ticket for a pair of new shoeB was given a personal examination behind closed doors of the charity office-. Little Fellow Cries, It took twenty minutes to get a confession from one little 9-year-old boy that the shoes he wore were tossed
into a corner Qf the woodshed last spring when barefoot time arrived. Finally he admitted that he had secretly changed his shoes after his mother sent him to the charity office after a new pair, but declared tearfully that the shoes he has been wearing to school are "no gooder" than the ones he was weariim. The shoes he wore had been worn through for about half the length of the sole. He left home with no protection to the ball of his foot except his stocking. Walking over the rough Ice on the way, he wore through his stockings and walked half way on
his bare feet to the charity office. Mr. Melpolder gave him a good pair of used shoes and told him to bring his other shoes. When he returned it was found that these were low shoes, in almost as bad condition, and he was given a ticket for a new pair. The one hundred little children who received shoes were so proud that they had shoes of their own possession that they remained in the business district for several hours displaying them. The supply was exhausted by noon today, but the paraders could be seen this afternoon, showing their new possessions to the public, ivho, in the heat of Christmas shopping failed to appreciate properly. One little girl said she could not remember of ever having had a new pair of shoes. Her rapidly growing brothers and sisters received the new ones, and when they were supplied she received their cast-off articles. One tot with a foot not more than seven inches long, was wearing a pair of shoes eleven inches in length, thin soled, and which evidently were made for a dance floor. He presented a comical but pathetic spectacle. The children were given a lesson In etiquette by the charity secretary. When a boy entered the charity office without removing his hat, an attempt was made to have him voluntarily do so by suggestion. "What do you do when you see a lady?" was asked. "Say howdo," replied one. "What is the first thing you do when you enter a school?" the boy was asked. "Take off my wraps."
! "What do you take eff when you go I into a barber shop to get a hair cut?" "Same things." ! "What do you do when you enter Sunday school?"
"Shake hands," the boy replied. In some cases like the foregoing the
