WARSHIPS SHELL MIDOLEKERKE BUT GERMANS HOLD POSITIONS Kaiser's Army Works Day and Night to Strengthen Lines Threatened by Advance of Franco-Belgian Forces Now Holding Lombartzde Big 42 Centimeter Guns Hav Been Mounted at Ostend.

State Briefs in Few Lines

BY FRANKLIN P. MERRICK, Staff Correspondent The International New Service. PARIS. Dec. 21. British warships have bombarded Mlddleboro, on the North Sea, inflicting severe damage upon the German position. A successful aerial inspection has been made over Ostend by the allies' aerial scouts, who report the arrival of fresh German formations at that point. The Germans are working night and day to Bfrengthen their positions around Middlekerke and Ostend to stem the advance of the Franco-Belgian forces which pushed to Lombartzyde early this week. The invaders have mounted some of their 42-centi

meter howitzers at Ostend. (Middle-' kerke lies four miles west of Ostend j and two and a half miles east of ; Westende, which was bombarded sev-1 eral days ago by English men-of-war.) j Antwerp Reinforced. It is reported from West Flanders j that the Germans have transported seventy thousand fresh troops to Ant- j werp and have strengthened their j lines along the Belgian coast with j twenty thousand reinforcements. Ger-1 man artillery, masked by forests along i the Heulebeek river, near Dadizeele, ! Becelaere and Moorssede is bombard-j ing the French and British lines north and south the Vpres-Menin highway, j The battle around Armentieres, Lille and I .a Pausee has become more vlo-;, lent as a natural result of the in-; creased pressure of the allies. The ! battle line at this point lies in the' form or a horseshoe, with I-a Hassee ' and Armentieres at the points, where the Caulks Be I. ill lies at the extreme eastern end of the curve, and it is there t hat the moat severe fighting is going on. There is great activity on the part of the heavy artillery along the center and on the heights of the Mcuho. but. the French columns which penetrated LorraiiiH and Alsace seem to have met with a check as they have reported no further progress in their efforts to advance toward Metz, Muolhausen and StrasBburg.

Fight in Argonne. In the Argonne there is considerable hand-to-hand fighting, for the French have Bingled out the army of the Germuti crown prince as the object for fierce and concentrated attacks. At Verdun the situation is unchanged. The great battle, which began four

teen weeks ago today, still rages over lines that have not changed to any extent during the last six weeks, and previous to that time the only appreciable change was in the extreme northern part where the fronts were extended into Belgium. Roulers is again unofficially reported to have been occupied by the allies, but this is not borne out by official dispatches. The British troops that advanced near Armentieres, and the French that attacked the invaders near La Bassee have unquestionably suffered heavy losses, as the Germans in that region hold strongly fortified positions along the canal near Douai. A St. Omer dispatch says that the Germans in their counter attacks north of the Ypres-Menin highway on Friday used their method of assaulting in mass formation. They have apparently adopted the method of the British of charging In extended lines with plenty of space between the soldiers.

Vapor Treatments for Cold Troubles Are now used in all hospitals. The vapors carry the medication to the lungs and air passages without disturbing the stomach. When Vlck's "Vap-O Rub" Croup and Pneumonia Salve is applied over the throat and chest, these vapors of Menthol, Thymol, Eucalyptol, Camphor, and Pine Tar are released by the heat of the body. Usually the worst colds go in one night croup in fifteen minutes. Vick's is fine for head colds, asthma, and catarrh, and is absolutely harmless. Three sizes from 25c up. adv.
