MUSIC STUDY CLUB ENTERTAINS WITH AN ORGAN RECITAL
Miss Alice Knollenberg Gives Three Beautifully Interpreted Organ Numbers Before Members of Club.
Christmas Music In Local Churches
The organ recital and Christmas concert given by the Music Study club on Saturday afternoon at half past two o'clock in St. Paul's Lutheran church, brought out an audience which filled the church and manifested its appreciation by frequent applause. The new organ in St. Paul's, one of the largest instruments in the city, lent itself to the sacred character of the program, and was handled with effect by the several professional musicians who appeared. Mrs. Lewis King, president of the
club, announced the program which I she opened with two organ numbers,
Fantasia by Bartlett, and a move-1 ment from a Mendelssohn Sonata. ! Duet Sings. Mr. C. F. Hitchins and Mrs. Dempsey 1 Dennis, tenor and soprano, from the First M. K. church choir, followed with j the familiar "It Came Upon the Mid- j night Clear," Mr. Hutchins' voice of j good quality being heard for the first j time in a recital by the Music Study j flub aside from an appearance with a double male quartet, Mr. Hutchins j .ones being well sustained and musical.
Miss Kthel HubeY, organist at St. Paul's and one of the committee having the arrangement of the program in c harge, gave two, numbers, the Gilman rxcerpt being full of appealing melody. Mrs. W. F. Krueger, Mrs. Ray Longnecker, Mr. Frank Braffett and IUr. Otto Krone, members of the First Presbyterian quartet, gave "There Were Shepherds," from Harker's "Star of Bethlehem," in their usual finished ensembles, with Mrs. Krueger, Mr. Braffett and Mr. Krone as soloists. Excellent Playing. Miss Alice Knollenberg, organist of the First English Lutheran church,
gave three of the most beautifully interpreted organ numbers of the afternoon, the first two, "Christmas Eve" nnd "The Shepherds," apropos of the season, the latter, "Fantasia in F. Minor," by Pollerl, displaying Miss Knollenberg's technical proficiency. Mrs. Charles Igelman in Marzo's Rending O'er a Cradle Ixjw," sang with much feeling a lovely song composition, the effect being enhanced by m violin obligato played by Mr. Fredrick K. Hicks, and also appeared in a ' no which followed. Mrs. Fred Hartel and Mrs. Charles Marvel, with Mrs. Igelman, gave Trehi's -'Holy Night" a fine interpretation, wlih the organ and a trio of instrumciita, violins being played by Miss Carolyn Hut ton and Miss Blanche Luken and 'cello by Miss Lucile Nusbaiim. Mrs. Igelman. Miss Huber and Mrs. King arranged the program and sevi ral members of the Music Study club acted as ushers.
Many of the churches will give programs of Christmas music on Sunday, while others will present them Christmas or the Sunday following. St. Mary's Catholic church will celebrate midnight mass and St. Paul's Lutheran will give a special Christmas program on Christmas day. St. Paul's Episcopal will have a full choral service at five o'clock Sunday with special numbers, which it will repeat the Sunday following, celebrating communion on Christmas day. The First English Lutheran will give its most elaborate Christmas program
on the Sunday following, by the senior j choir, and on the coming Sunday will j have a musical service by the junior j choir. The First Christian, Baptist and : Reid Memorial churches will have no j special Christmas music and the Sec-; ond English Lutheran will celebrate j the season December 27. i
