Walter Ratliff, local ornithologist for the biological survey, was fortunate enough to secure two rare birds Thursday. They are horned larks or octoconis alpestris, birds which breed and nest in Labrador, around Hudson Bay and in other points in the Arctic cfrcle. The horned larks are both females and are marked with pink, brown, yellow and black, being one of the few birds having- pink markings. The "horns" are black feathered elongated from the sides of the head. The larks are a third bigger than an English sparrow. Mr. Ratliff said that the horned lark of the terrestial species which he has secured is not to be confused with the pararie lark which sometimes comes to this locality in summer. The horned lark makes a sound described as "tseep" while the other species in flying sound more like species of wold ducks. Both the birds were shot within a short distance of Mr. Ratliff's residence. He heard them first and after some difficulty succeeded in shooting
and ' l,th. They probably will be exhibited 309 in a store window after they are prop
erly mounted. Within a few days Mr. Ratliff w ill receive several shore and wading birds

FRENCH AVIATORS FLY OVER ALSACE Bombard Saarburg With Bombs, Killing Two Soldiers on Duty. BY LEASED WIRE. LONDON, Dec. J9 Daring raids by French aviators into Alsace and Lorraine are demonstrating that the confidence as to the efficiency of the allies' aerial forces has not been misplaced. A dispatch received from Berlin today says that aeroplanes flying over Saarburg, a Ixrraine town, bombarded the place with bombs, killing two German soldiers and causing heavy damage. The same aviators, says the Berlin dispatch, dropped bombs upon the Rieding railroad station and upon the village of Heming. Paris reported yesterday that Metz and Strassburg, both German strongholds, had been attacked by French aviators. The Berlin messages makes no mention of any bombardment of these fortresses, but Saarburg lies almost midway between Metz and Strassburg. Like Rieding. it is on the railroad line connecting them.
