POLO TEAMS CLASH IK SECOND CONTEST OF LEAGUE SEASON Fans Expect Fast Games as Players Improve Rapidly With Practice A. S. M. Tackles Quigleys.
M.
TONIGHT'S PROGRAM. First Game 7:45 O'clock; A. S
vs. Quigley's. Second Game 9 o'clock; Greeks vs Smoke House.
The second games in the Richmond Folo league will be played tonight at the Coliseum. The final contest brings together some of the fastest players in the city. With Geyer, Bradfield and Clark, speedy rushers for the Smokes, in form, the Greeks will have their hands full in stopping them. Abel, half back of the Smokes, if ho rides Red Marine as effectively as he has clone in practice games played between the two teams, will made Red hurry to get by, but Red's footwork is gettng better right along. The work of this pair should be a feature of the game. Whether Dutch Oesting will bo able to keep up his scoring is a matter of much speculation, but there is one thing certain, he will to have to hit them close up to get by the goal guarding of Lancaster, who is especially good on long drives. Rill Fetzer is about due to come into his own in the scoring line. To catch Lefty Joe will be Oesting's job. The first game should be won by the A. S. M. in rather easy style, as they are a more experienced lot of players, ami their work so far has shown it. With Fry 'and Quigloji shooting them at Snip, the game should be a good one, as Snip is there all the time. Irish Carroll probably will get it longer vork:rmt than in the first game, when his playing was one of the features of tho game. The suits are all here, the fans are anxious to see the games, and the players are more than anxious to annex victories for their respective teams.

Thursday's Score. Earlham, 6; DePauw, 2. Wabash, 19; Rose, 2. Earlham shoved DePauw into second place last night when she defeated the Methodist team in a hot game of basket ball on the Garfield gym floor by the score of 6 to 2. Captain Dol-
j 11ns and Sinex of the Earlham team I were its bright stars while Dafler and ; Stegman played the best games for the losers. i In the Wabash-Rose game the former ran up a 19 to 2 score due mainly j to the good playing of Van Allen and j Webber. For Rose, Johnson and Penny showed good form and but for their splendid work the score would ' have been much larger.

BY LEASED WIRE. NEW YORK, Dec. 11 John Evers, captain of the world's champion Boston Braves, is in a critical condition, but has a "fighting chance" according to Dr. John Herrity, the attending physician. Evers has been sick for three daya at the hotel Somerset and js suffering from pneumonia. In discussing the case today, Dr. Herrity said that it would be five days before he could determine whether the great second baseman would recover. He said that the players' physical condition would be of great help in restoring him to health, if he succeeded in passing the crisis. Earlier in the day it was stated at the Hotel that Ever3 had passed a good night, but later in the forenoon his condition took a slight change for the worse.

FEARS LEAGUE GET NEW HEAD
Johnson Must "Can" FarrellDevery Crowd or Surrender Position.
MAY
NEW YORK, Dec. 11 Ban Johnson, president of the American league, is using every effort to put through a deal whereby the New York Yankees are to be sold to Jacob Ruppert, Jr., because upon the result of the negotiations depends Johnson's future in the baseball world." The Yanks, under the leadership of Frank Farrell and Big Bill Devery, have been a failure. They have given the American league a black eye, and if the American league expects to gain back some of its lost prestige, it must can the Farrell-Devery crowd. The canning job is up to Johnson. If he can turn the trick and bring new blood into the league it will pacify, for the time at least, that who are advocating his- immediate retirement from baseball. If he can't turn the trick if the Farrell Devery crowd continues to balk him it is likely that before another year rolls around Ban Johnson will be on the baseball side
lines and another man will be handling the reins of the American league. Johnson has a contract that still has about fifteen years to run. His Job, according to reports, pays $25,000 a year. If he were retired It would mean- that his salary would be paid just the same, and that the league would have to hire another man andpay him. But some of the magnates in the American leage are perfectly willing to do this.

"I feel confident that in this country and under conditions governing boxing In the United StateB I have a good chance to wrest the title from him. For Welsh I will be willing to do a reasonable weight."
