"Upon what shall the emphasis be laid by the Society of Friends the -ear?" Is the subject of a symposium appearing in the December issue of the American Friend, published by S. Kdgar Nicholson. Two of the articles are by Timothy Nicholson and President Robert L. Kelly of Earlham college. Writine on "Friends and Civic Pub
lic Service," Mr. Nicholson says: "I ; have long felt, and occasionally ex- ' pressed conviction that the Friends in this country have fallen short of their duty and privilege and sadly failed to exercise that influence for good in their respective communities, which hs Christian citizens they should have done. "We have uttered and published emphatic protests against destructive vils and civic unrighteousness, and proclaimed our ideals of righteous principles, but we have not made the necessary personal sacrifice of active participation in municipal and nationHi affairs to render these protests eflieent." He names a number of Friends who have played prominent parts in legislative matters, but says that the English Friends for surpass those in America in public service, and hold many offices. Kelly Wants Members. President Kelly in his article suggests that emphasis should be laid on "increased membership." He says: "I should say that we should unite in a long pull and a Btrong pull for increased membership, mid this because of the three following conditions: First, we need a conscientious task that will appeal to every ntember of the church. Second, we should cultivate the friendship of those about us who are without church connect him and invite them to join our church fellowship. Third, we have more work outlined that we can care for with our small membership. Let us develop n spirit of resourcefulness nnd demonstrate the vitality of the Quaker spirfl."
