ARMANDO MARSANS

PLAYS AGAINST 0, B, PLAYERS IN HAVANA

BY FRANK G. MENKE. NEW YORK, Dec. t. Armando Marians has been slipping a few things Over on organized baseball while rusticating down in that town of Havana, and some of these days when O. B. hears about it there'll be the dickens to pay. Armando, as many may remember, used to baseball ever and anon for the Zinzinnaddi Reds. Just as soon as her got a chance, Armando, being a sensible Cuban, made his escape. He escaped to the Federal league. 'Twas a cruel blow that Armando dealt the O. B. folks, for Armando is it real ballplayer, and O. B. needs about all the real ballplayers it has these days. Well, in due course" of time the Birmingham club, which is a part and parcel of O. B., journeyed to Havana and began picking baseball quarrels with the Cuban teams. Armando Marsans played with the Havana Reds under the name of Armando Marsans until the Birminghamers came along. The he became Armando Mendiendo. Rules Forbid Play. The rules of O. B. are quite explicit in one connection. And that connection is that under no circumstances will any club under the protection of organized baseball be permitted to play against any Federal league or any club that has in its line-up one of those nawsty, nawsty Federal leaguers. An there you are. Just as soon as the O. 1$. highbrows discover that the Birmingham club played against a team that carried the

disguised Marsons in its line-up there will be an investigation. And there will he wailing and gnashing of teeth. Ami there'll be alibis on the part of Birmingham. And there'll be Marsans giving the hearty horse laugh to the O. B. parties. Cubans Play Well. Baseball is in full swing in Cuba just now. There are about a dozen teams in Havana t hat are playing major league baseball. They are meeting all the barnstorming teams that wander down that way, and giving to each a varied assortment of beatings. I'alerma, the young Cuban picher, who is on the New York Giants' reserve list, is performing in wonderful style. He has pitched six games and has not been beaten. Some of his victories were shut-outs. Palmero went In against, the Birminghamers and let them down with four seam-red hits. He beat the Lincoln Ci: v. o games, allowing three hits in f t and only two in the second ..,a)ii The Giants, a colored aggregation, recruited in N-- York, rank as one of the greatest . ams in the country.

Before the high school quintet goes to Hagerstown Friday night for the return game. Coach Nohr will try to correct two defects which appeared in the contest last week. Xohr wants better team play throughout the entire game instead of sensational flashes. He wants also to break up the tendency the men showed to bunch up round the ball, leaving the opponents uncovered. With another week of practive the Hagerstown five with Starr and Werking in the game and playing on their own floor will treat the local five to some bad scares before the game is chalked up on the Richmond side of the score book.

QUAKER FIVE LACKS MATERIAL FOR JOBS AS VARSITY GUARDS

Six Fast Men Try for Forward Positions Morrisch and Winslow Battle for Center Place. An abundance of forward material and a scarcity of guards is the condition that has developed in the class basketball series at Earlham college which comes to a close this week. It is this question that Coach Whiteside will have to meet when actual varsity practice is begun next week.

Cy Lancaster, last year's varsity I

guard, is the only experienced man ' around whom to build a defensive ma- j chine. Wallace, who has been show- : ing up well on the Junior team, is per-1

haps the best man at the guard position, but what he lacks in actual experience he makes up in a fighting spirit. Among the Freshmen Wildman and Meeks has shown up well. Meeks, however, is short, and Wildman is not quite heavy enough for the guard position. Johnson, a Richmond boy, has been putting up a fighting game at guard for the Seniors during the class series, and will probably be a strong contended for the position, provided he is in condition to play. Morrisch Carries Weight. Morrisch and Fay Winslow loom up for the center position. Winslow is experienced, having played on the Quaker team two years ago, but. was out of sc'ol last year. His floor work is especially fast and he knows how to haidle the ball. Morrisch, however, has the weight, which is lacking in practically all the other material, and while he does not handle himself as well as Winslow, his weight is needed on the team. It is possible that he can be shifted to guard. Logan. Dunbar, Laning, Briggs, Hoskins and Templin have shown up well in the forward positions, and it will be a fight to the finish among these men. All except Laning and Briggs are Freshmen, but all are experienced men. Logan and Dunbar have shown up better than any of the others. Logan is not only fast in his floor work.

but is accurate in goal shooting, which i is the chief reason for the Freshmen i victories in the class series. Dunbar j has had experience on the Centerville t high school team. Last year he was ! considered one of the fastest high ; school players in the state. What i Laning lacks in weight he makes up in j speed and accuracy, so that he is j counted on as a strong contended for i a varsity position. " J Play Winona Aggies.- j The first game is to be played De- j cember IS at the Coliseum with the Winona Aggies. Because of the abun- ' dance of material which has developed : during the class games. Coach White- 1 side probably will work a large num- . ber of new men in the first game. Fron all indications, Earlham will : have the fastest outfit that has represented the Quaker college for many years. Despite the fact that, as was the case with the football squad, practically all are new men, the coach is confident that he will be able to whip them into working order early in the season. For the purpose of really testing the fighting qualifies of the men, the class games have been very loosely refereed. He believs that by this mans he is enabled to get a good line on the genuine basketball experience every member of the squad possesses. In the coach's estimation, "cork" is one of the main qualifications of a. good basketball player, and he took this means of developing it in the players during th class series.

CITY LEAGUE. W. L. Pet. Braves 27 6 .818 R-Y-M's 18 15 .545 Victors 10 20 .333 Athletics 8 22 .3U0 Twice bowlers In the City league boosted the season's high score last night. King in bis first game raised Green's record of 236 by rolling for a gcore of 242. In the third game Rockwood shattered King's mark adding seven pins to the total. Rotkwood now holds the record for the season with 253 pins down for one game as his achievement. King made the high pin total of 637. The Braves maintained their lead by defeating the R. Y. M.'s two out of three. WANTS XMAS GAME Centerville wants a good local team for opponents Christmas eve, the game to be played at that place. The Omars will probably try to arrange satisfactory terms as they are aching to get a chance at Centerville. Of the three oldest universities of western Europe Salerno, Bologna and Paris two were open from the first to women. They were Salerno and Bologna.

Tne Central Christian basketball team tonight plays the fast Greenville, Ohio, team at the Garfield gym. Greenville boasts of having a clever bunch of players and expects victory. Central Christian has two of the "Y" stars. Brown and Brunton, guards, who will hold down these positions wiih this team. Wllcoxen, of the Hoover-Bondo. will hold down one of the forward positions while Hale is slated for the other. A fast and interesting game

should be staged. Bull Durham, who ' plays center for the visiting aggrega-1
