HOWARD ADDRESSES RELIANCE WORKERS
"What satisfies your appetite," was s-il.ject of the talk by the Rev. E. (J. I inward at a noon meeting at the Reliance foundry Tuesady under the auspiri s of the religious work committee oi i he V. M. C. A. Rev. Howard spoke of the physical, in 'iital and spiritual appetites of men, i. id of their good and bad qualities. BY LEASED WIRE. WASHINGTON, Dec. 9. Reasons for the present industrial unrest constitute the chief feature of the first annual report of the United States commission on Industrial relations, made public yesterday. The commission states no conclusions, but simply summarizes the testimony of five hundred witnesses, whose opinions were taken at hearings in Washington, New York, Patterson, N. J., Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Lead, S. D., Butte, Mont., Seattle, Portland, Ore., San Francisco and Los Angeles. The report first gives the causes of industrial unrest generally agreed upon by the representatives of employers and the representatives of employes; second, the causes advanced by the employers; and third, the causes advanced by the employes. Causes of Unrest. Those causes general agreed upon are found to be as follows: Largely a world-wide movement arising from a laudable desire for better living conditions. Advanced by representatives of labor. Socialists and employers and generally endorsed. A protest against low wages, long
burg, -will preach in the L. U. B. church at Sugar Grove Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Dale are the parents of a baby girl which arrived Monday and weighed ninety-seven pounds less than a hundred. Daniel B. Williams of Marion, is still here as the guest of friends and relatives.
hours and improper working conditions in many factories. Advanced by practically all labor representatives, and assented to by many employers. A desire on the part of the workers for a voice in the determination of conditions under which they labor, and a revolt against arbitrary treatment of individual workers and a suppression of organization. This was almost uniformly approved by labor witnesses. Unemployment and the insecurity of
employment. Generally advanced by i witnesses from every standpoint. ! Unjust distribution of the products of industry. Advanced by most labor representatives and agreed to by most ; employers. ' Misunderstanding and prejudice, j Agreed to by employers and employes. 1 Agitation and agitators. Generally advanced by employers, but defended by labor representatives and others as . a necessary means of education. ' The rapid rise in prices as com- : pared with wages. The rapidly growing feeling that redress for injuries and oppression cannot be secured through existing institutions.
