FOUR FAST TEAMS PLAY FOR SUPPORT OF RICHMOND F Hoover-Bonds and Lay Plans to Capture Two State Titles High Shows Improvement. Basket ball win recehre better support this winter than for some years past. ' With two teams the HooverBonds and Y. M. C. A. starting out in championship form fans are backing them to take whatever comes their way. The Hoover-Bond is a new team but by name only, as Included in the personnel are old players familiar to the fans. Mel Penny, manager of this five. Is determined to annex the independent championship of the stte. With that in view the players themselves are giving Mel their best work at all times, practicing with the Earlham squad of tossers every week in a hard and conscientious manner on the Earlbam floor. So far Penny's boys have been having a rather easy time wi h the Quakers across the river but new that football 1b over Logan, Lancaster and the rest of the boys will be out in full force to avenge the earlier defeats. No matter who the winners are in these practicing affairs the work will be beneficial to both teams. Seasoned and experienced players practicing among themselves is far better than working the ball up and down the floor with no one opposing the progress. "Y- Starts Well. The Y. M. C. A. team coached by Physical Director Roach and captained by Spot Schepman, the old high school star, who played guard on the team that made such a gallant fight for the high school championship of the state a few years back has started out what promises to be as good a year if not better than last season. They have defeated all teams played this season with comparative ease, wining over such teams as the Connersville B. M. A. C, the Holy Grails of Anderson and the Kokomo "Y". All these games showed that the local team has worked up a fast and strong attack and an equally strong defense. In Laning Hoach has probably the most accurate goal shooter who has ever played the game in Richmond. Besides Laning there are Jones and Parker who have the knack of looping the ball when the team needs points. The high school team although not getting away in a winning style has finally come to earth and is playing nn Improved game. Getting started was what the high needed. With the addition of Brown at the forward position for their opponents. Not much is known about the Earlham to&m as it is the last to get started. Meeks id probably the most promising Kroshtnan that is trying out for '.he team. POLO DIRECTORS MEET ON RULES A meeting of the officials of the Richmond Polo league will be held Thursday night at 8 o'clock at the Y. M. C. A. when rules for the league will be adopted. The rules committee will meet, previous to the called meeting. Prospects of a game with M uncle on the local floor probably will be :liscussed. Muncio wants to play here nd also wants the local boys there for another game. ALUMNI TO DINE INDIANA'S COACH Plans are on foot among the alumni of Indiana university to give a banquet soon in Indianapolis in honor of Coach Childs. The alumni fully approbates the wonderful work accomplished by Childs and are taking this rntthod of showing their appreciation. It is likely that Scott, fullback on the team, will also be invited and presented with the trophy for recovering tlie greatest number of fumbles. Bowlers' Record For Last Games CITY LEAGUE. R. Y. MICHIGAN OUTLOOK ROSY FOR '15 YEAR SAYS F. G. E Green Team With Great Offensive Strength Starts 1915 as Veteran Eleven of Promise. BY FRANK G. MENKE. NEW YORK, Dec. 2. The Michigan eleven suffered more defeats in 1914 than it has suffered in any single season since "Hurry Up" Yost took charge back in 1901. At the same time, the 1914 Wolverines scored more points than has any maize and blue team since that of 1905. This record seems to show that the Michigan defense this year was weak and that its offensive strength was great. Which is just about the situation. Michigan's offensive strength, however, was made tip very largely of a fellow namea Maulbetsch. The whirlwind halfback score about half of Michigan's points, and by his great plunges carried the ball to points where the other players could take it over. Maulbetsch proved himself to be the greatest single scoring power that Michigan has had since Willie Heston quit footballing. Michigan's 1915 outlook Is extremely rosy. The Wolverines lose only three regulars through graduation: Raynsford, center, Hughitt, quarterback, and McHale, guard. Michigan started the 1914 season with a "green" team. The team did not show up very well, but the players got the needed experience. It enters 1914 as a veteran team, and Michigan ought to make Just about as large a noise next season as It used to make back In the dear, old days that are gone but not forgotten. "f WILL BATTLE CEHTERVILLE TEAM Reach Announces Next Game on Local Floor With Old Rivals. No game is scheduled this week for the "Y" basketball team, the prospective game with the Dayton Standards being called off. The next game will be with the old rivals, Centerville, on December 11. Centerville always puts up a scrappy and hard game. The Brotherhood team of Middletown, O , will be the "Y's' opponents on December 26. This is one of the strongest teams on the schedule, playing a number of college stars. Their center is particularly strong, as the boys found out last year when they defeated this team in the last few minutes of play, when Dismal Jones shot a r.oal from the center of the floor. Cornelius Bliss, Jr., president of the board of managers for the New York Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor, states that during the last month there has been an increase of 45 per cent in the applications for relief that have come into his office, as compared with the same period last year. Last year the association spent $245,000 for relief and figures that it will require more than twice that amount this winter.

HEAVY FOG COVERS CITIES EVERYWHERE New York Reports Heaviest Mist in Years Richmond in Darkness. BY LEASED WIRE. NEW YORK, Dec. 2.The United States weather man today announced that the fog bank, which for more than forty-eight hours has blanketed New York and its adjacent waters, is the worst recorded by the bureau in fifteen years. In area and depth it exceeds all records. The weather man holds out no hope of the fog lifting until tomorrow. In New York harbor all traffic is completely paralyzed. More than thirty ocean liners have anchored down the bay waiting for the mist to life. FOG ENVELOPES CITY. Not for years has there been such a fog in this locality as the one which hung over Richmond all of today, being so dense as to resemble a smoke bank. It was difficult, to distinguish objects a block distant, while objects two blocks away were absolutely obscured from view. Street cars and other vehicles had to be operated carefully to prevent collisions, and in near-
