i "Operator, I forgot to tell you I fwant the charges reversed on that talk I just had with Indianapolis." Did you know that Btich a remark causes approximately $25,000 worth of property to be held up for several minutes? Or when you call a person at Dayton and then do not respond immediately after your person Is on the line, you are holding up about $15,000 worth of property . for a 25-eent conversation? Patrons of Richmond who do not know It, and the long-distance operators of independent companies within a radius of fifty miles who do not realize it, are to be impressed with the fact within the next two or three weeks. To Hold School. William M. Bailey, manager of the Richmond Home Telephone company, is corresponding with W. S. Vivion of Chicago, secretary of the National Independent Telephone association, who has been holding schools in various Indiana cities for long-distance operators, relative to a date in this city. At Winchester last week there were forty chief operators, some coming from Toledo, Dayton, Lima and other titles. It is believed Richmond will prove a much better drawing card, and sixty or more operators are expected. The arrangements for entertaining the visitors will be made by the Richmond Home Telephone company, which will bear all expenses. "It's worth It," Manager Bailey said today. "The operators talk to each other over long-distance lines and often something arises which causes r'd iculous little nights. Our operators 1 ere and the operators at Indianapolis each thought the others had horns and were the meanest persons on earth. They met at the Indianapolis meeting and are now good friends. When the operators know each other the service is bound to be better.." Miss McGreevey Explains. Miss Stella McGreevey chief operator, is enthusiastic over the meetings, having attended two of them. Miss Marie cPters also attended the Winhester meeting. "We are getting a chance to meet people with a common interest," Miss McGreevey said. "I believe the longdistance service will be benefited. Of course, cw like to meet face to face iho operators we talk to very few lays. Wo learn to read people by their voices; more that way than by their faces, tl seems to become In htinct with us to learn people that way, but at the same time we like to meet each other and talk together.'' Although the difficulties encountered by long-distance operators are many, the two chief ones. Miss Mc(Jreevey said, are the impatience of the patrons and their unwillingness to wait nt the telephone until their calls ure returned. "Often when we have calls where three or four lines must be used to "inplete the circuit, and it hard to the calls through, the man here v. ill have gone hack into his factory ( r will have left his office, and it. takes ten or fifteen mirutes extra to complete the call," Mit-s McGreevey explained. "When patrons for-ret to tell us to reverse charges before they talk, we have to go to the same trouble of con
necting our lines again as if there would be another conversation. Then thr operator at the other end has to get the approval of the other party before a reverse charge ticket can bo made. Some times this causes no end ol trouble."
