HAIL RATE RAISES

AFFECT RICHMOND

Passenger rates on practically all the railroads in the country will be increased by advances announced by

railroads in trunk line territory ana Central Passenger association territory, in which Richmond is located, the increase to take effect here December 1. This advance has been recommended by the interstate commerce commission as a method by which the revenues of carriers might be raised. The new rate will not affect fares between points in Indiana, but apply only to interstate travel. The re-adjustment is baaed on a fare of 2Ms cents a mile, while the present basis is practically 24 cents. The following changes in fares that will affect local travelers were announced at the Pennsylvania ticket office today Richmond to Dayton, $1 to $1.05; Richmond to Cincinnati, $1.35 to $1.60; Richmond to Chicago, $5 to $5.45; Richmond to St. Louis, $8 to $9.91; Richmond to Pittsburg $6.50 to $7.58; Richmond to Cleveland, $4.65 to $5.53; Richmond to Columbus, $2.40 to $2.80; Richmond to Grand Rapids, $5.80 to $6.86.

CHESTERTON SEES BENEFITS IN WAR

KQKOMO

WILL PLAY

TWO GAMES IN CITY Hoover-Bond and "Y" Teams Schedule Contests With Fast Five.

CITY TO ENTERTAIN DISTRICT TOURNEY

The Sixth district high school basketball tournament will be held in Richmond on March 5 and 6, under the management of the State Hoard of Control of the Indiana High School Athletic association. The tournament will bring from fifteen to twenty-five teams of eight men each to the city, including teams from Oreensburg, Rushville, Newcastle, Winchester, Uberty and Connersville. The winning teams from each district will compote in the state tournament which is held at Bloomington under the auspices of Indiana University. The games will bo played in trie Coliseum, the Y. M. C. A. and one of the school gymnasiums.

Gilbert K. Chesterton, the famed English essayist, who has launched into the drama w ith some success, declares that the European war will be a cure for two great evils. "England's retreat being impossible," he says, "and being doomed to the evils of war, we may well make the best of its advantages." Equality and enlightenment promise to be the war's greatest fruits, he continues. The war is calculated to end the rich man's ignorance of poverty, a fact Chesterton rejoices in.

Two games of basketball have been scheduled with the Kokomo Y. M. C. A. team, which bore the reputation last year of having one of the strongest fives in the state. They will be brought here for games with the Hoover-Bond and "Y" teams on November 27 and 28, respectively.

Because of the "Y" ruling over the state the Hoover-Bond boys, who have been playing intercollegiate rules, will have to play A. A. U. rules. Thev

will be fully able to take care of this kind of play, however, and the Avay they have been working out makes Kokomo's chances for winning rather

small. With Captain Abe Rowe, H. Parker and Jim Harrington playing the forwards, the visitors' guards will have to be up and moving all the time. The same conditions will he found to exist when the Howard county buch lines up against the "Y" the following night. It looks as though to win either game they will have to extend themselves to the limit.
