0ST OFFICE GETS READY FOR RECORD CHRISMS MAILS Employes Expect to Handle 200,000 Pieces During Next Thirty Days Beck to Call Substitutes. In two weeks the Christmas period aM open at the post office. The following thirty days, no less than 120,000 letters and postal cards will be run through the cancelling machine, according to last year's count The figure is expected to reach 200,000 pieces this year. No attempt has been made to estimate the Christmas business for four years. An estimate was made four years ago and the figures were lost.

It would be Impossible to count the snail unless two or three additional clerks devoting their time to this purpose only, were employed. Extra clerks and an extra parcel post helper will be employed about December 1. Probably all the substitutes will be called in for the two or three days before Christmas when the mailing is heaviest. The post office employes hope the request of the department at Washington that mail be sent out earlier In the month with the stamp. "Not to be opened until Christmas" will have Home effect and more evenly distribute the heavy work throughout the month.

BY LEASED WIRE. CHICAGO, Nov. 13. Final preparations were made today for the re-opening of the Union Stockyards Sunday at midnight and the "resumption of slaugbtering Monday morning. Assurances were received of a big start, and a large killing is anticipated at the outset of business. Lack of funds was given for the new order which was put in force yesterday afternoon in Pennsylvania and was enforced throughout the west today. Stock men are fearful

that the government to save a few million dollars, will imperil more than $3,000,000,000 worth of live stock throughout the country. They do not believe it will be possible to stamp out the epidemic by the new method. Dr. Simon Flexner, head of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, made another visit today to the quarantined prize stock which were exhibited at the national dairy shown, and among which there are sixty-five cases of the plague. Take Hopeful View. Reports from members of the United

States Live Stock Sanitary association in nineteen states, according to J. ! J. Ferguson today, gave a hopeful view of the foot and mouth disease situation as existing In the country. The report follows: Indianapolis -In eleven counties positive cases; five others suspicious, the report diagnoses. Four counties cleaned. No new centers. Lansing Mich. We expect to have epidemic wiped out this week. No new cases. Find Exposed Cars. Minneapolis Three cars exposed cattle unloaded; transfer shipped west on reaching Glendive found diseased. Jefferson City, Mo. Have found no foot and mouth disease in Missouri. Lincoln, Neb Foot and mouth disease has not reached us. Bismarck, N. D. No disease in this state. Shipment of infected cattle fed here en route to Montana stockyards, are quarantined. South Dakota Clear. Pierre, S. D. No foot and mouth disease in South Dakota.

Des Moines Outbreak well In hand. Two herds in Iowa county, one in Jones couty. One in Howard county held for examination. Topeka No indication of foot and mouth disease. Frankfort, Ky. Eighteen cattle have been slaughtered at Shepardsville,

Bullett county. Other reports of suspicion but unofficial. BOSTON Fourteen lierdB, including about two hundred cattle and three hundred swine, in twelve towns in widely separated sections of the state. Many new cases. Harrisburg In addition to Pittsburg, Lancaster and West Philadelphia stock yards, we have one hundred premises affected. Providence, R. I. Sixteen points of infection in six town and one city, which are in two counties.

Trenton, N. J. Twenty-five cases

discovered in one herd in Hudson

county. Jackson, Miss. Do not believe the disease exists in this state.

at $2.83 per ton, while last year such coal cost $4.55 per ton. When it Is considered that four carloads of coal are required, It will be seen that the saving to the county is considerable. Jury Suggests Scales. "We would suggest a number of Improvements that the county commissioners well might make at the poor farm, as follows: The Installation of a pair of farm scales; a motor in the pump house, instead of the gasoline engine now there, which engine could then be utilized elsewhere; a slaughter house to be located below the hill and east of the heating plant, and a water tank for fire protection. "The buildings used for housing the

inmates were found to be clean, well ventilated and comfortably warmed. The food served the inmates Is of good quality, 1b well cooked, and Is served in sufficient quantity and variety. The discipline appeared to be splendid, and those who are able-bodied show a willingness to work. Mrs. Monarch Help. Mrs. H. L. Monarch, a charity world er of Richmond, has recently manifested an interest in the Institution, and through her activities, daily papers have been secured for the reading room, a music box and wheeled chairs are to be provided, and Christmas gifts for the inmates are promised. In the woman's ward ha1' en substantial and comfortable chairs

are needed for the coiua mates, and we would suggest their purchase. , "Mr. Petro showed a knowledge of I farming, and much executive ability in 1 his management of the farm. He is

taking care of the place In a husbandmanlike manner. "Barns and silos are filled with feed, showing the hand of a good farmer, while the superintendent, with the assistance of the inmates, has constructed 160 rods of new fence and has placed 70 rods of ditch on an acre of ground, making it yield abundantly when heretofore it was not suitable for tilling. Two thousand quarts of fruit and vegetables, all well canned, and two barrels of kraut from the farm, spoke eloquently of the Industry of Mrs. Petro. "The infirmary is now getting electric current from the town of Centerville, and all buildings and barns are so lighted."
