FOR CITYEXPEHSE The Robbins Administration Shows Balance of $59,212.56 in Treasury to Meet Bills for Two Months. The city under the Robbins administration has lived well within its income so far this year, according to an interesting financial report submitted by Controller AlcMahan at a meeting of the mayor's cabinet last night. To meet municipal expenses for the current year $276,138.62 was appropriated, and the controller's report shows that up to November 1 a total of $216,926.0 hail been expended, leaving a tsurplus of $59,212.56 to maintain the city government the remaining two months of the year. The report shows a balance of $1,726.65 in the account for crushed stone. As a matter of fact this fund lias been depleted, but when rtie report was prepared the last bills for crushed stone had not been paid. following the reading of the report. Mr. McMaliau took occasion to remark that the indications were that there would be less in the general fund at the close of the year than there was at the first of the year, adding that "if any salaries were going to be increased" it probably would be necessary to postpone the construction of the new crematory next year or cut the appropriation for the street department. Mr. McMahan referred to the recent action of the police commissioners in authorizing increased wages for the members of that department for next year, totaling $1,440. for which no provision is made in the 1915 budget. The budget comparison is printed elsewhere in this issue.

NO HUNTING. Hunting positively not allowed on the farm adjoining Mlddleboro, owned by Harriet Moorman and others.
During the next decade there will
probably be an increased demand for American horses in the countries now engaged in the European war. The demand may even continue much longer, as not only will horses be needed for armies, but when peace is restored more will be needed for agriculture. Already European agents are said to be endeavoring to purchase horses in this country and Canada, and there is an increased interest in many sections in horse breeding. To meet this increased European demand, American farmers may well endeavor to raise well-bred horses, but the department does not advise them to purchase a surplus of horses merely
for breeding purposes. It merely ad
vises that ordinary farm work should be done whenever possible by good mares, which should be bread to good stallions. It also desireB to emphasize the fact that only horses of high
quality may be profitably raised today.
Inferior horses are a drug on the market, and their production is to be dis
couraged as much as the production of good horses should be encouraged.
The United States has previously
been drawn on to supply European countries at war. In the Boer war
over 100,000 horses were bought here
by the British government. It may be doubted whether a foreign govern
ment could now obtain a similar supply in this country, except at excessive
cost. However, if farmers take pains
to utilize their good mares during this winter to breed them to good stallions, in the course of several years
(time enough for the foals to develop)
America will be better able to meet the European demand.
It is natural that European countries should look to the United States for horses, as next, to Russia it has more of these animals than any other country in the world. The United States and Russia possess 58 per cent of the world supply. Strange to say, however, there were no horses originally on our continent, and the present supply comes from stock brought over from Europe. Canada's supply is small compared to our own.
SCRUB BRED CATTLE PROFITLESS TO OWNER
One of the prime considerations in selecting cattle for dairy purposes is their blood origin. There is no immediate gain or permanent profit in maintaining a herd of scrub, or mixed bred animals or for that matter, a herd composed of the first cross of pure breds. This is true regardless of apparent superiority in present production. It often occurs that animals of the first cross of two dairy breeds, equal or in some cases excel their progenitors in quantity and quality of product, but when the second cross is made an animal inferor in all respects is nearly always the result. The good qualities of the parents may be transmitted to the first cross but inferior qualities are bound to appear in later generations. Continued cross or mixed breeding is certain to result in a herd whose breeding qualities are uncertain, and whose production is poor. The wise dairyman secures at least a few pure bred cows of his favorite breed and uses them as the foundation stock upon which he can build bis future herd. H ma V hA nnahla tn
afford more than a few pure breds to
Degm wun, nut he knows that by the
use or tne right kind of a sire, he can develop dnimals with which to replace the scrubs he is at first compelled to keep in his herd. Besides reproducing their good qualities with a regularity most certain and precise, pure bred dairy cattle are an advantage in that surplus stock can always be disposed of readily and at a good price, which cannot be said of grades. The men who in the past
bare recognized and taken advantage of these principles are reaping the greatest profits today from their dairy operations.
FINES HUNTERS. It cost Emil Powell and J. Pyle $19.76 each to learn the use of bunting licenses. J. J. Bravy, of Anderson, state fish and game office deputy took out a license in the county Monday and before he bagged any rabbits, be caught the two men hunting without a license. They were fined $5 and costs in Judge Abbotts court today. Part of the fee goes to the state fish and game department. The men were ordered to secure licenses.
