WOMAN REALIZES PLACE IN WORLD BY CHURCH WORK

Rev. W. O. Stovall Preaches Second of Series of Ser-; mons Which Outline Relation of Life. ! "In discussing the woman and the I church there are two things I am going to emphasize; first, the church as' the emancipator of woman; second, woman as the champion of the church." said the Rev. W. O. Stovall yesterday. ' "In the working out of this princi- j pie of Christianity, woman has been J able to find herself. She has been ! man's burden bearer, his plaything j the agency of bringing his children 1 into the world. She was tolerated I only as a necessity and treated always ! as an inferior. The woman never ' lived who was glad that she was a ' woman, until after the coming of Jesus . Christ. And no such woman lives today except where His gospel pre- ; vails. . "The woman we know today, the woman who Is glad she Is here, always found at the front in those movements that make for character and hapritipfia that woman is a result of Christianity. It is to the c hurch of Jesus Christ that we owe . i hat dynamic of human uplift consecrated wcmanhocd. It has given to the world what Iowell has called, " 'Earth's noblest thing- -a woman perfect.' j Active in Mission!. "And as a worker in mission fields woman has a large place. She has gone unarmed and sometimes alone into the places where it was considered dangerous even for men prepared for physical resistance to go. In the parkest. places she has appeared as an an angel of light. "As a preacher, custom has kept woman from gaining a foremost place, but as a writer she has done her part, and done it well. And woman has been the exponent of the principles of the church as they apply to the larger circle of life. Her efforts for human betterment have gone far beyond the confines of the church as an institution. She has carried its spirit into every department of life. "She was the pioneer in the modern temperance movement. The work of the CrtiFaders of a generation ago still goes on in the W. C. T. U. and othrr temperance movements. "In view of all that Christianity and the church of Jesus Christ have meant to womankind, the very last thing we should expect to find in this world is a woman infidel, but the most reasonable thing, the thing most in accord with the fitness of things would be the expectations of finding all women Christians." With the adoption of home rule by the voters of the state, Preble county will come in for her quota of saloons. Eaton, with a population of a little more than 3.100, will be entitled to six saloons. The villages of Gratis and West Manchester were wet" before the county voted "dry" and will also be entitled to one saloon each. At Gratis the patronage was not sufficient for the existence of a saloon, but notwithstanding that village never voted "dry" under any of the numerous laws. WOMEN SHOULD TAKE WARNING If the statement made a a NewYork Assembly of Women, that healthy American women are so rare that they are almost extinct, is true, it is time for the women of America to take warning and look to their health. It may been headaches, backaches, dragging down pains, nervousness, mental depression, that are telltale symptoms of some organic derangement for which Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound a simple remedy made from roots and herbs is a specific and may be relied upon to restore women to a healthy normal condition. adv. HITS POLICEMAN Reincarnated in Modern An archist, Helen Lands New York Jail. in BY LEASED WIRE. NEW YORK, Nov. 9. After a fight which gradually grew into the propor tions of a riot, Alex Berkman, an an- ' archist, and four of his followers were ! arrested early today. The other prisoners were Helen Goldblatt, known to j the police as "Helen of Troy"; her ' sister, Lillian Goldblatt, William j Shappoff and Abraham Blecker. I The clash started in front of a ' West Ninth street building when a policeman, who had been sent to that j vicinity to quell a disturbance, order- j ed Berkman and his followers, who j had all been banqueting together, to make less noise. The policeman was immediately surrounded and "Helen of Troy" started things by trying to remove the policeman's uniform without going to the trouble of unbuttoning it. In this operation she was ably assisted by half a dozen others, and the policeman seeing how things were going, rapped for aid. Berkman and his party were finally arrested. "This country certainly has Russia beat when a man can't go to a banquet with his friends without getting arrested for it,", declared Berkman. "Helen of Troy" said she thought it was worse than Russia, too. NOTICE OF APPOINTMENT.
