for member of congress exactly 32 per cent. The net Democratic loss In the district was within a fraction of 10 per cent of the vote cast In 1912, while the Progressive loss over 1912 was exactly 13 per cent. Gray Shows Loss. The gain In vote for congressman this year was 291 over two years ago, and this gain benefited the Republicans almost exclusively. Comparing the 1912 vote In the congressional contest with the vote cast last Tuesday it is shown that Gray lost a total of 1.976 and the Progressives lost 1401. The Republican candidate, on the other hand had an increased vote of 3668. Republican leaders today admitted that they were surprised that the "Progressive loss was not greater than It was. They were expecting the Democratic loss to be between five and six per cent and they believed the Progressives would lose from twenty to twenty-five per cent.,, of. their
strength of two years ago. An analysis of the results in the eongresslonal race in the various counties of the district Is interesting. In Fayette the Democrats lost 38 votes over 1912, the Republicans gained 410 and the Progressives stood firm, losing only three votes. Gray carried the county by a plurality over Lynch of 124. Two years ago his plurality over Risk, Republican, was 568. Fayette county is where Gray resides. Gray Loses Half. Gray carried Franklin this year by a plurality over Lynch of 561. Two years ago, his plurality over Risk was 1300. The progressive vote slumped off 153. Franklin is one of the strongest of the Democratic counties. In Hancock, another normal Democratic county, Gray had a plurality of 1267 over Lynch this year. His plurality over Risk in 1912 was 1937. The Democratic vote fell off 244. The Republican gain was 396 and the Progressives lost 215. Henry Surprises Lynch. It is a peculiar fact that in Henry county, the home of Mr. Lynch, where he expected a big vote, the Democrats made a gain of 22 votes, the Progressives lost only 190, while the Republi
cans gained only 311. Lynch carried this county, instead of one thousand or more, as he expected, by only 141. In Rush county, the home of James E. Watson and other standpat leaders, where a big Republican plurality was expected to be rolled up. Lynch received a plurality of only nine over Gray, while the Progressives made a gain of 171 over two years ago. The Democratic vote fell off 291 while the Republicans gained only 191. This vote of last Tuesday probably made Mr. Watson sit up and rub his eyes. In Shelby county the Democrats lost 177 and the Republicans made their second biggest gain, 815, and the Progressives suffered their biggest Iobs, 633. Gray was still able to carry this normally Republican county, however. In Union county the Democrats made a gain of 66, the Republicans gained ten and the Progressives lost 62. To further scattered about and scramble up the contents of the political dope bucket Wayne county, the Progressives stronghold of the state, showed the largest Republican gain in the district at the same time giving Mr. Russell a handsome plurality,
l.
476, over Qrf y. The Republican gain was 1166 against a Democratic loss of 791 and a Progressive loss of 440, but at that the Republican gain was not sufficient to make Mr. Lynch finish better than third.
