CHICKENS TO TAKE PLACE OF TURKEY FOR THANKSGIVING Grocers and Poultry Men Report Shortage of 50 Per Cent Due to Unfavorable Summer Weather,1 The Thanksgiving turkey crop is nearly 50 per cent short according to reports from farmers and produce buyers. Consequently many Richmond families may be forced to substitute chicken or beef for the national bird. Farmers say many of the young turkeys were lost during the damp cold weather last spring, and many others were lost from disease later. They say that young turkeys are hard to raise under even favorable conditions, and that the conditions this year were all against them. A local poultry buyer said today that turkeys were very scarce in the country around Richmond, , and., that the price would be correspondingly high, although it was too early to make predictions. Reports from other parts of the country indicate that the shortage is

general and delegates attending tbe national poultry, butter and egg association at Chicago yesterday, reported a general shortage of 25 per oent. BOYS VISIT WOODS DURING VACATION The high school and Garfield buildings were closed today, and several rooms in other school buildings in the city were dismissed to allow the teachers to attend the State Teachers' association meeting at Indianapolis. Pupils of the dismissed schools took advantage of the short vacation. Early this morning numerous groups of boys were foraging in the woods and fields near the city. The recent sharp frosts have ripened the nuts, and when school opens Monday there will be many proud exhibitions of . walnut stained hands.

JOY OF EFFORT. Tbe delights of thought, of truth, of work and of well doing will not descend upon us like tbe dew upon the flower, without effort of our own. Labor, watchfulness, perseverance, self denial, fortitude are the elements out of which this kind of joy is formed. 8. C. Jones. Nothing that is of real worth ran be achieved without courageous working. Man owes his growth chiefly to that active striving of the will, that encounter with difficulty, which we call effort, and it is astonishing to find how often results apparently impracticable are thus made possible.
