fHREE SCORES DEFEAT TEAM AT RUSHVILLE Heavy Kappas Flank Ends for Only Markers Inde pendents in First Game Re veal Strength. Arntz and McLear Stop At tacks of Opponents Back field and Carry Ball on Sensational Runs. Buttered and bruised but not out played or outgamed the Richmond Independent football team lost to the Rushville Kappa Alpha Phi team at Rushville Sunday by the score of 20 to 0. This was the first game for Richmond, while the Kappas have , been playing and practicing steadily for a month aud have an exceptionally good independent team. That the locals were able to hold them to three touchdowns speaks well for future prowess on the gTldiron From the start was fast and furiously fought. The Kappas were forced to use their entire repertoire of plays Not one of their forward passes with which they have been showing up otaer teams, worked as Coach Lewis had his men drilled on the proper defense for this particular play. Arntz Plays Well. Most of their gains were around the ends and off tackle bucks, while they were unable to gain through the local line which had two men, W. May and Shinn, who had never played a game of football before. Arntz at full, and McLear at left half played great ball, both on the defensive and offensive throwing the Rushville backs for big losses time after time and carrying the ball for good gains. The team needs a little more practice to perfect the machine. The next game will be either with the fast Shelbyville team or Gwynville and Arlington combination next Sunday In detail yesterday's game was play ed as follows: First Half Richmond kicked off to the Kappas who made a twenty-five yard return, and with skin tackle plays and end runs soon had the ball over tor a touchdown. Gunning failed to kick Koal. The Kappas kicked to Arntz who returned 10 yards. Arntz kicked out of bounds. Richmond blocked three forward passes and on the next play Drischel went around left end to the locals 15 yard line. Richmond held and the ball see-sawed back and forth. Finally Drischel got away for a 20 yard run around left end for a touchdown. Gunning kicked goal, as the first half ended. The second half began with Rushville kicking to Duning, who returned 10 yards. The locals took a brace at this time and made several pretty plays for good gains but could not score. The ball was worked back and forth. Time was called with the Kap pas in possession of the ball in the local's territory. Richmond fought hard in the last quarter to cut the Kappas from scoring in this period, holding them repeatedly on the 20 'yard lino and blocking every attempt at trick plays and forward passes. Arntz booted the pigskin to the center of the feld and Gunning made a pretty return to the 2o yard line, from where Lewellen went over for the last touchdown on a wide run around right end. Gunning kicked goal. The lineup: Richmond Kappas Shallenberg Pierce I-eft End J. May Lewellen Left Tackie Kuhlenbeck Carrol Left Guard W. MAYOR ASSESSES FINES FOR HUNTING Mayor Robbins today explained to two Italians in city court that hunt ing on Sunday was a violation of one of the state's old "blue laws" and that tney must never be guilty of such an offense again. They smilingly gave mm tneir promise and each paid his fine of 1 and costs. The Sabbath hunters were P. DeLong and Caitano Camn The two nimrods shot a rabbit yesterday and a complaint was made to the police by the farmer on whose land they were hunting. Help the Stomach Digest Your Food When the stomach fails to digest and distribute that which is eaten the bowels become clogged with a mass of waste and refuse that ferments and generates poisons that are gradually forced into the blood, causing distress and often serious illness. Most people naturally object to the drastic cathartic and purgative agents that shock the system. A mild, gentle laxative, positive in its effect and that will quickly relieve constipation is Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin, sold by druggists at fifty cents and one dollor a bottle. It does not gripe or cramp, but acts easily and pleasantly and is therefore the most satisfactory remedy for children, woman and elderly persons. For a free trial bottle write to Dr. W. B. Caldwell, 451 Washington St., Monticello, 111.

RACE NEXT John Believes 1914 Machine Good Enough With Few Changes to Win Another Pennant Contest. BY FRANK G. MENKE. NEW YORK, Oct. 26. Those who are looking for John McGraw to bust up the 1914 Giant machine and heave it into the scrap heap are due for a disappointment. John may do a little tinkering here and there but when the Giant machine of 1915 gets into motion there won't be very many new cogs in its make-up. There art two reasons why the Giants won't be reassembled entirely. One is that McGraw feels that his 1914 oumt is gooa enougn to gran a pennant if a few weak cogs are removed and some new ones substituted. The other reason is that the most of the 1914 regulars are hooked up by ironclad three-year contracts. McGraw couldn't put his old stars on the market and get value received for them. He couldnt offer them for sale and find many ready buyers because those who are in the market for players don't want to pay a fancy price for the men and also pay fancy salaries to the players for the 1915 and 1916 season, as would be the case if they bought some of the Giants. To Use Same Staff. The Giants pitching staff in 1915 won't look much different than it did in 1914. Mathewson, Tesreau, Marquard and Demaree are attached to the club by contracts that still have two years to run. McGraw wouldn't let Tesreau or Matty go no matter what offer was made. He will keep Demaree because "Steamer Al" looks like a real pitcher and he will keep Marquard unless som other club makes him a most tempting offer for the eccentric left hander. Contrary to the general belief, McGraw isn't anxious to let Marquard go. He figures that 1914 was "Rube's" off year. He recalls the fact that nearly a dozen games that "Rube" lost was not through any real fault of "Rube's," but because the Giants time and again failed to hit behind him. A half dozen "f "Rube's" defeats were 1 to 0 or 2 to l affairs. Reflects on Batters. I "When a pitcher loses games of that ind it doesn't reflect on his ability it reflects on the lack of batting power )ohind him," declared McGraw. J Ever since the middle of July the ank and file of fans have been "can- j dng" Merkle, the Giants' first sacker. j firing Merkle seems to be one of the j nniial ways the fans have of enter-j aining themselves, but unless Mc- j '.raw finds some star of the first water j mong his first basing recruits next pring, Merkle will he back at his old j tation. McGraw thinks a lot of Mer- j :le's ability. Doyle will be back at second next i -car. He slumped badly this year, oth in fielding and hitting, but Doyle j normally is a steady fielder and a slug-; :or. Probably he will do a come-back j n 1915. ;
