PRESENTS LIFE OF HAUNTED CRIMINAL

Victor Hugo's Masterpiece Depicted With Powerful Effect on Canvas by Movie Picture Camera. Perhaps it is not known by the great Inajority of moving picture patrons that "photo-plays" of the highest class and, the adjective is used advisedly, like the presentation of "Lea Miserables," from Victor Hugo's masterpiece literary creation of that name, which is to appear in this city three nights and three matinees, commencing next Monday at the Murray theatre, engage the highest salaried dramatic artists obtainable for the different characters. Actors and actresses who are not only celebrated for their stage work, but who possess by nature the absolute personal fitness for the parts in the photo-play presentation as well. It need hardly be said then, that the famous French film manufacturers, Cines et Cies," of France, scoured the theatres of Paris for the right performers for the interpretation of the

different parts in this wonderful photo-play production. The outlay soon rushed to the unprecedented sum of 500,000 francs, or $100,000 American money, making the largest amount ever paid for a photo-play film, and, at the same time laying the foundation for the greatest success ever accomplished in the photo-play line of work. Margaret Joins the S. P. C. A And Has a Novel Adventure.

"Unknown Girl" Film at Arcade

Among the many big films to be ehown at the Palace is the great Selig wild animal melodrama, "In Tune With the Wild," a splendid story that 'features Kathlyn Williams. Tuesday and Wednesday, the 5-act Shubert-Brady big production, "A Gentleman From Mississippi," that presents the star, Tom Wise, in the role of Senator Langdon.

Tnursday the Lubin serial, "The Beloved Adventurer." and the sensational criminal play, "The Price of Crime." Friday, "The Long Way," a Broadway star feature, an absorbing threepart story from the novel by Mary Inlay Taylor. Sunday an astounding 3-reel drama of New York, "Shackled Souls."

PARTS OF VILLAIN TIRES ACTRESS

"I don't want to be a 'heavy' any more," wailed Kathlyn Williams, as 6he drove into the Selig studio after seeing herself on the screen at a Broadway house. "I insist that I am not a cruel villainess and to observe misery makes me unhappy. All I want is to be a nice, gentle leading woman who performs kind deeds and makes tbem all happy ever afterwards in the pictures." The fair Kathlyn has been cast as the "wicked woman" in two recent features and has not recovered her peace of mind yet.

Margaret is becoming a very steady shopper these days, what with the necessity of adding the proper accessories to her winter wardrobe. Besides, Our Mutual Girl has become a leader in the doctrine of American frocks made by Americans for American women, and so, with the ultra-fashionable modistes of the metropolis, Margaret weekly is spending the truly fabulous sums needed to habit herself anew. One morning, just after she has left Stern Brothers' magnificent shop, where she has purchased some furs and hats, Our Mutual Girl motors to the office of Colonel Alfred Wagstaff, president of the Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She joins the society and then is shown about the Pound and the animal hospital and the many humanitarian methods there in vogue for protecting dumb animals. She decides to take about twenty barking, frisking, happy-go-lucky dogs, possessed neither of pride of ancestry nor much hope of posterity, to her Westchester country place and there give them a good home. But Ralph Hamilton objects to this plan when she asks his advice, and a quarrel ensues. Ab Margaret drives home with these jumping little creatures in her limousine she comes upou a case for the S. P. C. A. A palpably sick horse is being abused by a heedless driver, and when Margaret objects to his treatment of the horse and the truckman turns upon her Margaret has him arrested. There ensues a reconciliation between Ralph and Our Mutual Girl that should be seen and not described here. This is in chapter 42 of Our Mutual Girl, which shortly will be shown here.

The Arcade next Wednesday offers "His Unknown Girl," a special feature in two parts. After securing a commission in the army, Dick Carruthers meets and renews acquaintance with an old classmate. Lieutenant Arthur Mason. Later, Dick is knocked down by an automobile belonging to the Irvings, a wealthy family. He is taken to their home, and Mabel, the daughter, nurses him back to health. Major Walker, a suitor for Mabel's hand, becomes intensely jealous of Dick's presence. After his recovery, Dick leaves the Irving home deeply in love with his nurse. The army is ordered to the front and Dick goes with it. Major Walker, seeking Dick's death, orders his command to take a very dangerous position on the firing line.l In a terrific battle, Dick receives a mortal wound and Walker, seeing the enemy is driving them back, turns coward. He tries to desert, but is shot down by Lieutenant Arthur, who brings up reinforcements and by a gallant charge defeats the enemy.

Lyric Offers Lady Raffles On Thursday the Lyric will show "My Lady Raffles' in "The Mysterious Hand." "101 Bison" Three-Reel drama. Francis Ford and Grace Cunard discontinued "My Lady Raffles" series of crook-detective dramas to produce the sensational serial play, "Lucile Love." The remarkable success of "Lucile Love" undoubtedly justified this, but still you have not forgotten and, will not forget in some time, such dramas as "The Twins' Double," "The Return of the Twins' Double," "Tba Leopard Lady," and "The Mystery of the White Car." You liked them for their virility, action and sparkling plots. Above all, you enjoyed the work of these two artists, Miss Cunard and Mr. Ford, who were responsible for the writing, the directing and the acting.

ZOO COLLECTION

One of the strangest animal combinations conceivable is to be seen at the Selig Jungle-Zoo, in Los Angeles, where a baboon is the playmate of three queer little Malay bears. The quartet are housed together in one of the new bear pits and are aos friendly as puppies. They tease and play tricks upon each other with the vivacity of monkeys, but the fur never flies.

In the big Shubert-Brady film production. "A Gentleman From Mississippi," the Palace offers another of those wonderful subjects which are making this theatre so popular. This picture in other cities is proving even more popular than "The Lure" or "The Dollar Mark." Richmond play-goers who are attending these big productions every Tuesday and Wednesday will enjoy one of those rare comedy dramas that

can be seen only in the larger cities

Tom Wise, the star in the speaking play, has the lead. The scenery is from the play and

the thousands of people in this city '

who have read the book or seen the play will enjoy the photo-drama all the more as the entire story is staged at the places of which it is written, Washington, D. C, and a large plantation in Mississippi.
