CHURCH'S PURPOSE TO RESCUE SOULS
SAYS REV, TE
JAN
"The church has been established for the purpose of saving bouIb for eternal life, and not primarily to Improve social and Industrial conditions," said Rev. George B. Tejan of Avalon, Pa. In an address today before the Lutheran Synod convention at Trinity Lutheran church. The speaker added that with the salTation of souls comes improvement in social, political and industrial conditions. "Much of the work of the Church today does not reach beyond man's temporal welfare, while the purpose of Christ's atonement reaches over and covers man's eternal welfare," said Rev. Tejan. Continuing along the same line of thought he showed that the churoh can improve these conditions, by getting men interested in their eternal welfare by applying the power of God's word. Missionary subjects were before the synod yesterday and today. Members of the synod are much Interested in missionary conditions, due to the fact that two German missionaries, Kev. Whltted and Rev. Manaeke, who have been working in the Telugu district In India, have been made prisoners of war by the English on the grounds that they are German citizens. The expression of members of the synod whs that the present war would have a great effect on missionary work, due to the retrenchment of the people and Industries who are supporting missionary work. Rev. A. Beck, of Thornville, O., spoke on the "Qualifications and Requisites of a Successful Missionary." He said. "To be faithful, one must have faith in the work and the field." Tomorrow afternoon the synod will adjourn to visit the Wernle Orphans Home. In the evening there will be a meeting of the Association for the Distribution of Missionary Literature. On Sunday, Rev. G. W. Lose of Columbus, Ohio will address the Sunday school, and Rev. G. E. Golladay will preach in the morning. Rev. O. T. F. Tressel of Dayton will occupy the pulpit in the evening. KOLL GIVES NAMES OF DONORS TO AID SOLDIERS' WIDOWS
Hans Koll bas issued the following
anent the money which has been raised here for the aid of the Red Cross Society:
"The following list shows donations received from kindly hearted people intending to help the good and noble work of the Red Cross Society and for the support of the widows and
orphans of German soldiers fallen and
wounded on the battlefield. Much Work Left. "Much is still left to be done, and those interested feel that the younger generations, the sons and grandsons of German parents, who are indebted to those parents and their clean home surroundings, that good, healthy blood flows In their veins, 'a healthy mind in a healthy body,' as Father John said, will come to the front liberally with their assistance. "The committee will also receive gifts from those, who in order to strengthen the highly laudable spirit of neutrality of President Wilson, should prefer not to have their names mentioned publicly. Let nobody stand back! If we live happy and satisfied today in our beautiful home town of Richmond, we owe that fact much more to the industry, enterprise and perseverance of our forefathers than to any Individual efforts of our own. HIS ORGANIZATION TO TRANSPORT POOR
Secretary Melpolder today entered into a transportation agreement for the Central Bureau of Charity which will affiliate Richmond with hundreds of other cities of the country under the Russell Sage Foundation agreements for shipping dependent families. No special rate is made and the charity will pay full fare to any point for applicants who qualify. The applicants must not have enough money to pay their transportation and they must be materially bettered by the change. In case the applicant becomes a dependent again within nine months after the move, the sender is responsible for the expense of keeping and must forward money to return the person or persons. Under this agreement, there is no passing along from state to state but the applicant must be sent the entire distance on one ticket. Records of the social condition of the applicant
DANDRUFF SOON RUINS THE HAIR
Makes It Lifeless, Dull, Dry, Brittle and Thin.
Girls rf you want plenty of thick, beautiful, glossy,, silky hair, do by all means get rid of dandruff, for it will starve your hair and ruin it if you don't. It doesn't do much good to try to brush or wash it out. The only sure way to get rid of dandruff is to dissolve it, then you destroy it entirely. To do this, get about four ounces of ordinary liquid arvon; apply it at night when retiring; use enough to moisten the scalp and rub it in gently with the finger tips. By morning, most if not all, of your dandruff will be gone, and three or four more applications will completely dissolve and entirely destroy every single sign and trace of it. You will find, too, that all itching and digging of the scalp will stop, and your hair will be silky .fluffy, lustrous, soft, and look and feel a hundred times better. You can get liquid arvon at any drug store. It is inexpensive and four ounces if all you will need, no matter how much dandruff you have. This simple remedy never fails. adv.
