SOCIETY FOR STUDY OF DRAMAS ELECTS MRS. H. R, ROBINSON Branch of National Body to

Educate the Theatre-going

Public Organizes With Officers and Directors. The publlo must be educated to patronise better plays before the producing manager will book the better class of plays. This was the key-note of an Interesting- talk by Mrs. A. Starr Best of Evansten, 111., last night before an audience of about one hundred which assembled in the High School Auditorium to organize a Richmond branch of the Drama League of America. Mrs. Best, the national organizer, gave a history of the organization of the league, and outlined the work whloh might be done in Richmond with an active association. The Drama League of America, Mrs. Best said was organized in Evanston about four years ago and today the league has an organization in every state in the Union and in many of the foreign countries. Routes Good Plays. The purpose of the drama league is to form an organization in each city of any size which will patronize the few good shows that the National organization will send to that city. The League, Mrs. 13est stated never condemns a show but merely insures support for the right kind of plays. She eaid that the National organization had three or four plays which it could route through Richmond this winter If the Richmond people would organize to support the plays. In this way she pointed out that the people would be gradually educated to the better plays and at the same time the producing manager would know that Richmond would support the right kind of plays. Mrs. ISest said that it would probably take some time to get very definite results with the new organization in Richmond, but with the course of study of the drama outlined by the National organization if carried out by the local organization would bring very beneficial results to the community. Dues for Year, $1. The dues for the organization were fixed at $1.06 a year with a sustaining membership of $5.00 for anyone who "would like to contribute more than the regular annual dues. The National organization issues a "ulletin to every member of the organization giving an outline and criticisms on the plays which are sanctioned by the national organization. The meeting last night launched the organization for Richmond, adopting a constitution and electing the following officers and committees: Chairman, Mrs. H. R. Robinson; first vice chairman, V. D. Foulke; second vice chairman, Robert L. Kelly; third vice chairman, George L. Cates; recording secretary, Miss Elizabeth Morris; corresponding secretary. Dr. L. P. Ross. A Pertinent Question. The question has been asked, "In what way are Chamberlain's Tablets superior to pills?" The answer Is, "They are more mild and gentle in effect and more reliable. Besides they improve the appetite, cleanse and invigorate the stomach, correct disorders of the liver and leave the bowels in a natural and healthy condition, while the use of pills, owing to their drastic effect, is often followed by constipation." mediately began to dress when the fight started. She was self-possessed from the time the police arrived. Marks on her neck were seen by the police, but the examination so far has not revealed any attack on her. She says Walker came into the third room of the apartment and asked her for her 15-year-old son. She says she told him to wait a few minutes and the boy would be home. "I told him to take a seat, that I was going to change my dress," Mrs. Brown said. "He followed me to the door and we were talking pleasantly when Mr. Brown stepped into the doorway. He rushed at Mr. Walker and attacked him first." Mrs. Brown denies the odious charges which her husband infers in his statement to the police. A boarder at the home, who came to the apart

ment after it had been deserted last night for hi6 clothing, said that Mrs. Brown could not be made the target for such charges, as in the three years he has known her, her actions have been without fault. Mrs. Brown's sister married Walker three or four years ago. Mrs. Walker if? living in Indianapolis. It is said the couple separated a few years ago. They were not divorced.

contents of the torn-up apartments with every evidence that a battle had occurred between the two big men before the shooting. No one attempted to move Walker's body, the position of which, with two bullet holes in the wall, indicated that the combatants in their struggle fought all over the room. Brown pointed out to the police where each incident happened. He showed how he had entered the front room of their apartments from a hall door. He had removed his hat and coat and started to read, believing his wife was not at home. Then he heard the two entering the second room from the rear. Hears Man's Voice. "When I heard a man's voice I sat still and awaited developments,"

Brown said. "I saw ray wife was start-1

ing to disrobe, and she was talking to Walker. Then I stepped into the door. Walker rushed at me like a demon. When I recovered from the attack and got the revolver he retreated and I shot him." There were three loaded shells In the 25-calibre automatic revolver. Brown shot two wildly. Then Walker clinched but he could not seize the gun because the barrel was only one and one-half inches in length. On the third and last bullet. Brown pulled the trigger with the barrel pressed against the base of Walker's neck. Brown is six feet tall and heavily built. His assailant was six feet and three inches tall, and although slender was muscular. When the dead body was turned over on its face an hour later, pure whisky ran "from Walker's mouth. There was no blood even around the the wound. Bullet Paralyzes. In a post-mortem examination by the coroner, two hours later, Walker's lungs and internals were found to contain about half the blood in his body. Coroner Peirce said that Walker could not have fallen immediately from the shot wound, but that he was completely paralyzed when the bullet lodged in the spinal cord. Mrs. Brown was a helpless witness to the fight. She had started to remove her clothing when her husband appeared in the doorway, and she im-

P. J. LYNCH.

A man's neigbbors come very near knowing what manner of man he is. Their opportunities for observation are numerous and there is little chance that one can escape their estimate, which generally can be depended on to be true and just. Since his nomination, P. J. Lynch of New Castle, Republican nominee for congress from the Sixth Indiana district, has received a number of letters from his old home in Pennsylvania, wishing him godspeed in his present contest. Mr. Lynch was born and grew to man's estate in one of the oldest Friends' communities in the Keystone state in the country that received the impress of the character of William Penn. Those old neighbors know Mr. Lynch for his true worth and the letters he is receiving from them will be prized more highly than any temporal honors that may come his way. The following letter from George R. Chambers of Harrisburg. Pa., of a number of communications that Mr. Lynch

nas received from Pennsylvania QuakI ers who know that he is the kind of broad-minded man that is so much

needed in congress. He wrote as follows: My Dear Joseph: Thee could scarcely Imagine what a gratification it was to me to see by the papers that thee had received the nomination for congress. No better man could have been nominated and have no doubt of thy election, and only wish I could cast my vote for thee. Thy friend " GEORGE R. CHAMBERS. Harrisburg, Pa. HEAR HIM! Mr. Lynch is campaigning in Wayne county this week. Attend one of his meetings and hear him discuss current political issues.
