EARLHAM TACKLES ,WABASHSATURDAY Forty Rooters to Accompany the Quakers to the Big Annual Scrap. About forty students will accompany the Earlham football team to Craw"fordsvllle tomorrow for the annual clash between these two schools. The team and rooters will leave tomorrow morning on a special interurban car, and they expect to come back with the Crawfordsville scalp dangling at their belts. Coach Whiteside has given his men the hardest kind of workouts for this game, and the improvement shown this week justifies the coach's confidence that Earlham will give a good account of herself tomorrow. Both Thornton, half, and Bowed, full, will be, in the game, and this should add about 50 per cent to the offensive power as compared to what It was in the game with Wittenberg last Saturday. Hard scrimmage was gone through last night, which lasted until 7 o'clock. Earlham will line up for the kickoff as follows: Brunner and Calvert, ends; Semler and Spruce, tackles, Fowler and Kinnaman, guards; Morrish, center; Logan, quarter, Thornton and Mills, half, and Bowen, full. HEAVYWEIGHTS MATCHED Sam Langford and Harry Wills have been matched for a scheduled 20round bout before the Pacific Athletic Club, Los Angeles, on Oct. 27. Wills Is one of five contenders for the heavy-weight championship of the world. The Boston "Tar Baby" is another. With Jack Johnson in France and only a figure head at that, this bout should do a great deal to ward clearing up the heavy weight situation. BIG ONES MEET. Frank Chance, on his way by motor to California, upon arrival to his great surprise met "Napoleon" Lajoie, another baseball king, who was enroute with his wife from South Bend, Indiana, to Des Moines. The baseball Monarchs enjoyed a rare reunion and forgot the thunder-storm that kept them here twenty-four hours in the "talk feast" that followed the unexpected meeting. PLAYERS NUMBERED. BASEBALL FANS WORRY AT WEATHER IN MORNING
Prospect of Rain Brings Gloom to World's Series Spectators, While Rival Managers Pick Slab Artists Suited for Dark Day Work 35,000 Persons Ready to See Braves and Athletics Battle for Premier Honors Teams on Edge to Grab First Game of Pennant Struggle.
BULLETIN. PHILADELPHIA, Oct 9. The sun came out bright at 11:30 o'clock, giving assurance that the game between the Boston Braves and the Philadelphia Athletics would be played. Trie local weather man then stated that It would not rain this afternoon. BY FRANK G. MENKE, Sporting Editor of the International News Service. PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 9. A large flock of dun colored clouds burst Into view with the arrival of dawn today, whereupon everybody almost tearfully said to everybody else. "Gosh, I guess the weather man was right. It sure does look like rain before the day is done." No greater calamity could befall Philadelphia in particular and fandom in general than a heavy or continuous rainfall in this teeming metropolis today, for this was the day when the irresistable Braves and the immovable Athletics were scheduled to answer the great scientific question of, "What would happen if these two forces met," by battling to a finish in the first game of the series for the baseball championship of the great wide world. Clouds Predominate. At odd moments during the early morning the sun feebly showed itself out from among the heavy clouds, apparently in an effort to chuck the weather forecaster Into the Ananias club. But the forecaster declared that the sun could not get away with it. "The weather will be unsettled throughout the day, with probable showers around noon and in the afternoon," reiterated the forecaster this morning, whereupon everybody in this town rose up and hurled harsh and cruel words at the forecaster. The stage was all set for the blue ribbon act in baseball. The actors already are encased in their make-ups and drilled to the minute. The fans holding the tickets have completed the job of killing off their fondest doting grandparents. Nothing now remains but for the sun to shine steadily or the rain to hold until tomorrow. If it does not rain and continues dark and gloomy right up to game time Manager George Stallings of the Braves may shift his plan to pitch Dick Rudolph and probably will work Bill James, who has a fast ball that is hard to hit, when the gloom is thick, Chief Bender, the greatest single game pitcher in baseball, will do the hurling for Connie Mack's gang, with Schang on the backstop end, according to the dope this morning. Gowdy will catch for the Braves. Shifts Batting Order. Stallings today decided upon a shift in his batting order, putting Gowdy in sixth place, moving Maranville up to seventh, placing Deal next to the pitcher. The Athletics batting order is unchanged. If rain does not halt the festivities planned to commence at 2 p. m., it is estimated that about 35,000 fans will be witnesses. Of these 21,000 will look on from inside the field, while 14,000 others will see it through the knot-holes or from the neighboring roof tops. Enterprising persons residing in the vicinity of Shibe park have built grand stands on their roofs and are charging from fifty cents to $1 to $5 for the privilege of seeing the Athletics and Braves perform from long distance. Arrest Speculators. About 10,000 fans were in line when the $1 reserved ticket windows opened this morning and 5,000 of them were turned away as only 5,000 tickets were sold. Those who failed to get any of the $1 seats and who previously had failed to get one of the $2 or $3 reserved seats that were placed on sale Wednesday sought out the ticket speculators. But most of them sought in vain. The "specs" had a fairly healthy supply of tickets but they have taken to the woods, so to speak, because the police arrested about twenty of their number during the night and threatened to arrest all others caught offering $2 seats at the bargain price, Sir, of $5 and 3 seats for $7 and $10 or $15 in case the prospective buyer looked as if he didn't care much about expenses. In certain portions of the town where the fans congregated there were loud spoken remarks about the Athletics being 2 to 1 favorites in the betting. Also that the Athletics would clean up "that Boston gang in four straights." However, the Boston back er wno round any 2 to 1 money around nere considered himself extremely lucKy. Most of the 2 to 1 betting was in idle conversation only. Odds at S to 4. The odds, when money figured, were around 5 to 4 that the Athletics were to win the series and about five to four that they would win the first game. A big Boston delegation arrived in town this morning, augmenting the arrivals of yesterday. The Bostonians arriving today brought along a. carload ORRINE FOR DRINK HABIT So uniformly successful has ORRINE been in restoring the victims of the "Drink Habit" Into sober and useful citizens, and so strong Is our confidence in its curative powers, that we want to emphasize the fact that ORRINE is sold under this positive guarantee. of money and lost no time in betting it on the Braves. They were disappointed to learn that the 2 to 1 odds they had heard about were largely fictitious, but they gladly took the short end of the privilege odds of 5 to 4, and covered nearly all the Athletics money in sight. Before proceeding farther, It might be advisable to mention that Stallings, as yet, has not punched Connie Mack, and its unlikely that he will do so. His first sight of Mack today will be at the ball park, which will be well populated with Philadelphia police, whose duty 'tis rumored, is to protect Connie Mack and other Quakerites from begin assaulted by a foreign foe. There Is considerable ill feeling between the rival players and veiled threats are being made on both sides that "if those guys start anything during the game, somethings going to bust." This has led some persons to believe that a few one round boxing bouts might be staged at the park today. Oldring Released. Reuben Oldring, who plays left field for the Athletics, was clutched by the strong arm of the law yesterday, but is at liberty today and was scheduled to play, weather permitting. "Rube's" wife had him jailed on a non-support charge, but things were adjusted so that "Rube" won't have to spend world series, week behind the bars on a bread and water diet. He is out on bail.
The line-up announced this morning was: Athletics. Braves. Murphy, rf. Moran, rf. Oldring, If. Evers, 2b. Collins, 2b. Connolly, If. Baker, 3b. Whitted, cf. Mclnnea, lb. Schmidt, lb. Strunk, cf.
