Germany Strengthens Forts About Cologne
BY LUDWIG VON KLEIN. THE HAGUE. Sept. 18. The German fortifications about Cologne, Duisberg and Wesel are being strengthened, apparently as a defensive measure, according to reliable reports received here today. These two cities occupy strategic positions along the Rhine and constitute the western line of defense. Their capture by the allies would be a terrific blow to Germany. They guard Essen and the Sudge district from which come the great German guns and the chief supplies of the German armies. Essen is the arsenal of the German empire. Not only are the great Krupp
guns made there, but the mills where the armor plate for battleships and powder and ammunition works are also located in that Prusian city. Seventy thousand-men are employed in the Krupp gun works alone, showing the magnitude of the plan which is working night and day under the necessity of the present war. The Krupp crucible gun steel is of the utmost homogenity, or close grain and fibre, having elasticity which is peculiar of Krupp ordinance. German military men believe that its superiority over French artillery has already been shown.

OLD DUBLIN HORSE DROPS IN TRACKS
DUBLIN, Ind., Sept. 18. On last Wednesday evening as Mr. and Mrs. James Tweedy were coming home from New Lie b on, their old family horse dropped dead in the harness at Bert Hiatt's farm, north of town. This animal lived to be nearly 30 years old and was perfectly sound. It was a Morgan type. In later years all the work It did was driving to and from town and out to the farm, and the horse will be greatly missed by Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy and those in town who have become used to seeing it.

One of the newest of musical farcial shows is a brisk, merry affair which the thoughtful author calls "September Morn," and serves delightfully to entertain he or she that may be in search of real, live amusement. The producers, Rowland and Clifford, who have a long string of theatrical successes to their credit, have given their latest funny musical show an extremely elaborate mounting, both in regards to scenic effects and costuming. The series of stage pictures have created favorable comment every where the piece has been presented. That jolly comdian, Leo Greenwood, always as welcome as the proverbial flowers in spring, is the principal of the cast, and associated with this brilliant fellow of nimble legs and funny faces are many happy comedy players who keep the fun moving at a rapid-fire pace. The company numbers forty, and the pretty chorus of girls has much to do with putting over the tuneful jingles and attractively arranged en
sembles. The dances are many and have to do with the famous tangos and graceful hesitation waltz movements, which are the hits of the leading cabarets and big music halls of New York and London. "September Morn" is simply delightful from curtain to curtain, and Ollie Carew 'the American Gaby Deslys," has made an Immense hit in this new fun show. The attraction comes from the La Salle opera house, Chicago, where it
bad a highly sucessful run. At the Gennett theatre, matinee and night, September 19. "Potash and Perlmutter." There's going to be a merry time at the Gennett Monday night, for Abe Potash and Mawruss Perlmutter will be there fresh from their seond year's stay at the Cohan theatre, New York. Abe and Mawruss ome with their entire staff and omplete original outfit that is guaranteed to turn out a thousand laughs per performance. They are the most modest and lovable fellows in the world in spite of the fact that a million people laughed until they cried over them in New York, and they may be depended upon to
turn out the same A-l quality of work here as in the Metropolis. Abe and Mawruss are the creatures of Montague Glass' brain. He wrote them In the Saturday Evening Post, and Manager A. H. Woods put them on the stage. Their reception was in the nature of an ovation, and ever since their first appearance they have been the most widely talked of characters of the present-day drama. The story of "Potash and Perlmutter" deals with the adventures of Abe and Mawruss, their friends and their rivals. The two partners, despltethelr continued quarrels, are shown to be generous and loyal to a fault. Trouble pils up fact upon them. Their rival has a designer whose goods make those of Potash and Perlmutter the laughing stock of their customers; the Russian government has their bookkeeper arrested on a trumped-up charge, and in order to save him from extradition they risk their fortunes and are on the verge of bankruptcy. Then enters Ruth Goldman, the designer of the famous Arverne sacque, and with her enters sunshine and happiness. She secures a great politician to help the bookkeeper, she gets out a new sacque for Potash and Perlmutter that brings in trade with a rush ; she helps to rout the rascally lawyer, and finally she consents to become Mrs. Perlmutter, while the young bookkeeper wed s the charming young daughter of Abe Potash. Plenty of love and plenty of law, plenty of pinochle and plenty of politics, plenty of fashions and plenty of fun in this most delightful of comedies.

CHICAGO, Sept. 18. Police are investigating today the story told by Joseph D'Andrea, business agent for the Excavators' union, who was found in a doctor's office with his left hip shattered by a discharge from a sawed off shot gun. D'Andrea told the police he was shot by a man who came up to him and posed as his friend. Police say that persons in the vicinity declared they heard no shots and an inquiry was to be made among members who attended a union meeting where officials believe the shooting took place.
