Peggy Powkm There will be many radical changes in smatt footgear for the fall and winter season. With the introduction of the numerous novelties and extreme effects it is well to remembet that the subject of a correctly fitted shoe is one of vital importance. Shoes should be long enough and sufficiently wide for comfort wtihout rubbing and also give proper support to the instep. Lightness, grace and flexibility ar characteristics of the best of the new offerings. Fabrics will be utilTzed most extensively in combination with patent leather, gun metal and glazed kid. Patent leather is given remarkable prominence, especially with black, grey or fawn cloth, whole, quarters or gaiter effects. Some of the tops have reinforcements of leather at the heel to protect the material. The tendency is toward long, narrow effects; longer vamps and narrow, plain toes, without perforations of any kind, predominating. As much attention is paid to the heels as to the toes. There are modified Cuban heels for street service, Spanish heels for dressy boots and the Louis heels for evening wear. A distinct novelty is a low leather French heel which is used on tome dancing

slippers. Plain or fancy button fastenings are used in an overwhelming majority of instances; indeed, few laced boots are worn, except for heavy walking. It is predicted that suede leathers in various colors will be worn for dancing and semi-dress. Bronze boots will continue in favor and will often be seen in combination with brocades. Especially attractive are patent leather shoes with black and white brocaded tops or those with the uppers of tinsel vesting or of gold or silver cloth. Some exclusive models are fashioned of Satin de Laine, velvet or satin. A satin boot, shown in an exclusive shop, had invisible lacing under a black satin draped top, which fastened at the side with clasps and was trimmed with a rhinestone ornament. The vamp was of patent leather. The country-wide craze for dancing has had its influence upon shoes, for the feet must be attractively attired; especially as the skirts are worn so short. Such a bewildering array of slippers as there is to choose from gorgeous brocaded slippers, satin slippers to harmonize with the gown, bronze, silver and gold slippers slippers trimmed with

bandings of rhinestones, with buckles?

bows, slides or jewelled buttons, certainly, there is every evidence of luxury in all this presentation of dainty slippers. Buckles set with colored stones to match the gowns or hairpins are used extensively. In fact, the dancing slippers all show some ornamentation. The black satin slipper holds its own and is either decorated with a stunning buckle or beaded in black or steel beads. There is fancy just now for cut steel shoe ornanjents. A smart pair of slippers which had openwork vamps, so as to reveal the dainty hosiery to better advantage, was much admired. Novelties in Hosiery There never has been a season when such fanciful color effects in hosiery were exhibited as at the present time. The taste of the woman of fashion is as keen in hosiery as in any other detail of dress. Preference is given to grey and fawn color, but, of course, black is always in the lead. For dressy .wear the stockings harmonize with the costume. Bronze is as popular as ever, and maybe more so. A practical idea is the stocking with garter attachment which prevents the dropping of the stitches and thus saves

much annoyance. r Other stockings have worked eyelets or buttonholes for the same purpose. Some recent innovations are stockings with elastic tops for those who do-not wear garters all the time. Some silk stockings are sold with a supply of .mending silk, so that there can arise no difficulty in matching a shade. The latest novelty is an openwork stocking, so constructed as to permit the insertion of a piece of embroidery material tp match the gown. Black and white stockings, woven in decided stripes, is one of the latest Parisian novelties. The fad for shaded effects has been revived and ombre silk stockings, shading from the darkest to the lightest tones, can be obtained in nearly every hue. Black and iridescent beaded designs form the decorations on some of the imported stockings. Of course these have to be cleaned instead of washed. Others ' are embellished with lace, medallions ; and butterfly effects, embroidered designs or with gold and silver insertions. White silk stockings, tinted or hand painted in dainty floral patterns, are exquisite for wear with negligees. Another fancy is for the allover lace stocking in delicate colorings.
