Hog Prices Advance $1.20 More Than Last Week Receipts Smaller. BY LEASED WIRE.
CHICAGO, Aug. 11. With meat
prices ranging from 2 to 8 cents above that of Saturday, the cost of war was
felt practically in every middle west
home today. The prices of foods have
also advanced and there was possibility they would continue to go up.
The jump in meat was considered
so serious today, that the directors of the Chicago Butchers' association called a meeting for Thursday to dis-, cuss the change and appoint a com
mittee to investigate the causes. Many butchers blamed the packers for the advance. Steaks today were quoted at from 2 to 6 cents higher than Saturday, while roasts sold from 28 to 32 cents a pound, an increase of from 2 to 3 cents. At the stock yards, hogs were more than $1.20 higher than last week, and receipts were smaller. Packers said there was a scarcity of animals and that the farmers wece holding for a higher market. Corn, wheat and oats yesterday closed much higher. The only marketable food not high at present is the potato.

SUBSIDY
DECISION
REMAINS IN FORCE
South side residents who petitioned the board of county commissioners for the election to decide on a subsidy to the Richmond-Hamilton Traction company, will make no effort to mandamus the board, it was announced today. If mandamus proceedings are started, it will be by Eugene B. Purtelle, the first petitioner, A. W. Blickwedel said today. Mr. Blickwedel does not believe the south side is being treated
rainy by the commissioners or any
other body of officials.
Purtelle has not filed any papers in
court asking a writ of mandamus
against the commissioners but should
these papers be filed it will not be a
surprise to the officials. Purtelle hinted that this would be done. The matter will then be entirely in the hands of Judge Fox.
been planting mines of the highest power and most destructive quality known to modern warfare. "As the bow of the Amphion crashed upon the iron coated mine the vessel gave two jerky plunges that threw the seamen from their feet. Before they had time to scramble upright there was a shattering explosion and flames leaped upward mingled with the debris of the wreck. "The two funnels of the warship were lifted heavenward like arrows shot from a bow and the entire forepart of the powerful vessel was splintered. Big Guns Smashed. "Wreckage and parts of human bodies rained- upon the disturbed waters. The heavy guns which had been flung upward by the terrible force of the explosion, fell into the sea with great splashes. So mighty was the force that splinters of steel and guns from the Amphion's batteries fell among the vessels of the destroyer fleet, which was some distance off, causing damage to these vessels. "Flames played all over the wrecked warship, indicating that part of the mine had been filled with an inflammable acid, which caught fire when exposed. Many of the wounded sailors among the suvivors are suffering from frightful burns and the bodies of some of the dead- are seared with fire. "Some of the survivors likened the disaster to a mine explosion. The Amphion sank immediately as the explosion had ripped her hull open from stem to stern."
GOVERNOR HARRISON. No one has yet come forward to defend Governor Harrison of the Philippines, whose administration was severely criticised by Representative Millor of Minnesota, on the floor of the House. "The present administration of Gov. Harrison," said Miller, "has resulted in bringing American citizenship into dishonor and disgrace." Miller also introduced a resolution calling for an inquiry into Harrison's acts.
