E. ILIFF DESCRIBES GIRARDIITSJPfllllTlflG Critic Solicits Recognition for Exhibit of Local Artist's Work. BY EOQAR ILIFF. Mr. Frank J. Girardin, a Richmond artist of great merit and considerable reputation in art circles over the country, has on exhibition in the Ferguson Investment Rooms, No. 4 North Ninth street, a collection of his best
work. It would interest Richmond lovers of good pictures to go and see them. Mr. Oirardln's best picture is "Morning In the Woods." The particular time is just after a shower and the sun is bursting from the elouded heavens and casting a light upon the beech trees and the path. Patches of blue sky, very faint, one sees through the leaves. The locale is Glen Miller and lovers of thlB park will at once recognize the particular spot caught by the artist in his creation. This picture is almost entirely green and taken directly from nature, an effect that artists claim is almost impossible. Mr. Girardin also exhibits the old No. 9 school bouse on the Henley road, east of the city, with its beautiful surroundings and its school paths and scenes of childhood. This is a valuable picture and will appeal to many Richmond persons. Besides other pictures of his own creation Mr. Girardin possesses portraits of Washington and Jefferson. These portraits are very old and while tbey bear no marks of identification they have very intrinsic evidences of being from the brush of Gilbert Stuart, the famous portrait painter of George and Martha Washington. Stuart seldom signed his work and often remarked that his pictures would make themselves known without his signature. The writer has studied the originals of Stuart's George and Martha Washington, a pair of unfinished portraits hanging in the Boston Art Museum, and the general ensemble of Mr. Girardin's possessions seem to indicate Stuart. Richmond people should not fall to see this collection of paintings and give recognition and encouragement to the fine and valuable work of Mr. Girardin. LOCKE VILLE, IND.
