L TWILLING, CENTER FIELD. RUSON OF CHIFEDS 1III6S HOME RUN E Wcaghman's Club Presents Combination of Lightning 'Ffelders and Timely Hitters for Richmond Game. Tke Chicago Federal league team, which at present seems in a fair way iMgue, will cross bats with the Rich-: toad baseball club Sunday, August 9, and 'for the first timo this season t friends of Charles Weeghman, the owner, mho was born in Richmond, will bare a chance to see the fast-traveling team 'that is piloted by Joe Tinker, former star of the National league. The Chicago Federals, who are nickamed the Tots, the Buns and the Ghifede, have on their roster of players some of the fastest men in the country. The outfield in particular is i made up of men who have earned repu-) tattoos both at the bat and in the field. Tae outneld also has tne record or being ' the only left-handed outfield in the Federal league, and is composed of Flack, Zwilling and Wickland, all dangerous men at bat and on the bases. Art Wilson, who for years was with the New York Giants, is doing the bulk of the receiving, and has shown up the opposing teams when they have tried. to steal bases on him. In addition he has earned the title of fencebuster, and it was due to his habit of getting home-runs over the left field fence that Weeghman found it necessary to move the fence several yards further back at his Chicago park. The distance was too easy for Art. But siaee the fence has been moved back tae has merely lengthened out his drives a trifle and continues to lace them over the fence. Get Timely Swats. Zwilling and Wickland also come in for considerable credit as home-run swatters, and Beck, who occupies first base, has a habit of sending them over the fence when men are on bases. His licks are usually very disconcerting to the opposition. Beck, who has shown probably the most marked improvement this year of any member of the team, unlike many a hard hitter, does not seem to worry when he comes to bat when runs -are needed to pull a game out of the fire. A good many hard hitters seem to lose their nerve when rune have to be sot, but it is not that way with Beck, and many an opposing pitcher has found to his sorrow that It would have been a good thing to have passed Beck when he sees the ball mailing over the fence, and realizes that a game that he had considered as sewed up has been lost through the mighty drive of the firstbssseman. Joe Tinker, the manager, who is known the length and breadth of the country as one of the foremost shortstops, occupies that position, and from the Infield directs the defense of the team. Joe is lightning fast in his fielding, and though not one of the leading hitters of the team is one of the most dangerous, as he, like Beck, has a habit of getting a hit when the hit is the most ieded. Rollie Zeider. who plays third base, is -another member of the team who is starring. He is a great favorite with the fans, who take great delight in roasting him about his large nose. Farrel Fast One. Farrell, the youthful second baseman Of the Chicago Federals, has proved his right to major league company koth on the bases and in the field. He can make a stop and a snap throw to catch a runner probably faster than any man in major league baseball. Being young he is willing to learn, aiid playing next to Tinker, is in a position to profit by the coaching of a veteran of the game. The pitching staff of the Weeghman team is exceptionally strong, being led by.euch veterans of the major leagues as nenanz ana urennan, wnue ouier notable members of the hurling staff are McGuire, Prendergast and Fisk imwk n an in an me unicago r eoer - I 1 . . n j o .1 t i. 1 . 1 ! i wguc it-aiii is uiie ui me uBi - i:ai - anced and highest-classed that has 1 ever represented Chicago. 4 .--'-f y u 1" TINKER, MANAGER-SHORTSTOP. COBB AFTER LEAD FOR EIGHTH YEAR American League Star Slugs 'Em Hard Enough to Beat Others. BY FRANK G. MENKE. Ty Cobb, of butcher soaking fame, seems to be headed in the general direction of his other years in fast company the batting leadership of the American League. Tyrus isn't slamming them out with the frequency of 1911-12-13 but, "there's a reason," the reason being that he doesn't have to. No one in the league just now shows any signs of finishing the year with .400 or anywhere near that total, so why should Ty unduly exert himself? Tyrus has a habit of never trying to make a runaway race of the batting business. To lead and to let others follow, close enough to make things a bit interesting that's Ty's method. Before Josephus Jackson busted into the clubbing contest in the American League, Ty was content to club 'em out around .370, which was quite enough to give him the leadership. But. Josephus, after really getting unde way, soaked the leather for .408 or o. And Ty, oh, he went .420. That was enough to beat Josephus in a convincing fashion. Had Joe gone to .500 it's quite likely that Ty would have taken notice of Joe's bet and raised his average to about .515 - or .518. Jee gave Ty another .400 battle and once again Ty was out by just enough to make the victory decisive. Last year Ty batted only .390 or so. But it was enough, because Jackson dropped to .370. This year Ty got away to a bad start, but in the past eight weeks, he has been hitting 'em again just enough to get back to his old place at the top. His lead isn't large, but tha"t isn't Ty's idea of a batting battle. He likes to keep competition close-7-and then breeze in under the October wire 1 Unecda Biscuit Tempt the appetite, please the taste and nourish the body. Ty has lead the league seven years in a row. And this looks like number eight. The National League is tooting George Burns, of the Giants, as an outfielder who ranks with the great American League quartet Cobb, Jackson, Speaker and Milan. Burns is not as spectacular as the American Leagtters, but his averages this year show him to be considerable of an allaround outfielder. Burns is batting well over .300 and hi3 hitting is extremely timely. He seldom has failed to deliver in a pinch. Burns is a better thrower than Cobb or Jackson, is pulling as many wonderful fielding stunts as the great Speaker, is a whirlwind on bases, and best of all, seems to be without nerves and absolutely lacking in the temperamental stuff that detracts so much from the usefulness of stars.
