Catcher Explains Disappearance and Promises to Play Next Sunday. . i Novack has returned and will be in the Richmond lineup next Sunday against the Hello Boys. His sudden disappearance last Sunday, which necessitated the hurried call for Kneisley, the Heidelberg catcher, was caused by sickness, according to word received by Manager Kenny today. Novack has been playing a stellar game behind the bat all season and his disappearance last Sunday caused some worry among the fans. His story of his disappearance last Sunday is that he was overcome with the beat while in swimming at Cincinnati last Friday. He was sick in bed until Monday afternoon and was unable to get in touch with "Kenney to Inform him of his inability to play against Connersville. Because of the excellent showing made by Kneisley last Sunday he has been signed as a utility man for the Quakers. He showed Sunday that he was an exceptionally good batter and according to his past record, he can play practically any position. The Hello Boys are coming to Richmond next Sunday loaded for victory. The two defeats administered them earlier in the season have worked up tneir wrath and Manager Armstrong has been strengtnening his team during the past few weeks with the express purpose of beating Richmond. So far this season, only one Cincinnati team has come near putting it over Dick Kenney's Quakers and consequently Armstrong is not having much trouble getting some strong players to play against -Richmond for practically every Cincinnati player is anxious to hank one over on them. Netter has signed up with Richmond for the rest of the season and McCann, whose position he took at right field, was released. In the last two games, Netter has shown himself to be fast In the outfield and is believed to be a good addition to the team.

It Is certain that the Reds now have passed their weakest period of the season, and that from now on there will be a noticeable improvement in their work over their performances of the past five or six

weeks. This statement Is made on the strength of the showing made byhe'w. players, added to . the team recently, the fielding and; hitting of Mollwitz, first baseman, Daniels and " Twontbly, outfielders, being of so' impressive a nature that It is certain . they will greatly strengthen the aggregation as soon as they get to working properly with the other members of the team. For a time after the desertion of Marsans and the failure of Hoblitzel to get into his batting stride matters looked extremely blue for the Reds. However, Manager Herzog was not In the least daunted. He set about securing men to fill the weak spots on his team, and seems to be gradually recruiting the right sort of material for a strong finish. More players will report to the team during the present eastern trip, so that the followers of

the game will have something better to witness out on, Redland field than was offered them .during the recent series of the .Reds at home. ' ' . ' sNewfYork to Win. . , Whilo.it is , reasonable to. suppose that" the New York team again will win the championship In the National League this year, thereby establishing a new record of four consecutive championships, all the other places in the National League, so far as finishes are concerned, are in doubt. The Chlcagos have a fairly good lead in second place, but can be overtaken by St. Louis in a few days. The next five teams In the race are so closely bunched that scarcely a day. passes that does not see a change in the standing of two or more of the teams in this division. With the improved work being shown by the Reds, and

further strengthening in sight, Manager Herzog is confident. that the team will return from its - present ' eastern trip in-.the first division and remain there to the -finish, r - Among the players who 'are expect: ed to report to Manager He'rzog on the present eastern . trip are Outfielder Killefer of the Minneapolis .team. Catcher ' Severoid of 'Louisville, and Pitcher' Pahrer- of Dayton. " killefer' is considered the best outfielder " in. the American -Association and will come to the Reds as soon as the local club turns a catcher and an inflelder over to the Millers. Severoid has practically been purchased and booked for service on or before "August 15. It will be remembered that Severoid was with the Reds during the regime of Hank O'Day. His work with Louisville this season stamps him the best catcher in the A. A. Fahrer, the Dayton pitcher, recently held the Reds for nine innings without a hit, and looks like the real goods. It is likely that this trio, and other new men, will be seen on the Reds' line-up when they return home the middle of August,

playing their first Sunday game with Brooklyn on August 16, to be followed with the last . Sunday encounter of the season -with 'New Yorkon' August -23.

BASEB&y LAYERS Fifteen Trophies to Be Presented When League Season Closes.

To make arrangements for a banquet for all players of the Saturday Afternoon league, a committee was appointed at a meeting of the league directors last evening. The banquet will be held as soon after the close of the season as possible, which will be Sept. 22. The committee is composed of

Mace Beyers, John Ulrich and W, F. Drlscbel. The place where the banquet will be held; has not been decided. , ' , The money derived from the 'benefit game two weeks ago with 'the Muncie i S.- A. Li-team, will -be used to- defray the expenses. .At. that ,time approximately. $75 was -cleared. All the players that are 4fc good standing with 'the Club will be , invited to the banquet, besides" officials of the factories represented in the league. Talks will: also be given by members of the league' as well as -outsiders. . - w,.. At this time, fifteen trophies will be awarded o the players on the winning team. The trophies have been donated by the Goldsmith company, of Cincinnati.
