MADAME CAILLAUX f AIIITS AS LAWYER ASKS DEATH ORDER : ' . ' ;" Chenu Pictures Her as Assassin and Pleads for Execution . on Guillotine as Terrible .Penalty.

.PARIS, July 28. The shadow of the guillotine was lifted from Madame Henrietta Calllaux. slayer of Editor Oaston Calmette thia evening. In bla closing speech against the defendant la the trial that has stirred for eight days, M. Herbauz, the public prosecutor, dropped .the charge of premeditation and admitted that there were extenuating circumstances in the pris

oner's faror. ? PARIS, July 28. Madame Henriette Calllaux fainted today while M.

Chenu. counsel for the .. prosecution,

was making a plea to the jury, asking for her conviction for the murder of Editor Oaston Calmette. She was car

ried from the Court and the session was suspended while she received medical attention. .Her collapse came when Chenu pictured her as a cold-blooded assassin and demanded a verdict of guilty with death on the guillotine as the penalty. Great crowds beselged the Palace of Justice today, men and women fighting for an opportunity to witness the final scenes in the dramatic trial of Mme. Henriette Calllaux for the murder of Oaston Calmette, editor of Le Figaro. Armed republican guards stationed at the doors were rushed several times by the frensled spectators, but succeeded in holding them back. Scores came to the building during the night and camped there in discomfort, but happy in having forestalled possible rivals. Expect Murder Verdict The fate of Mme. Caillaux probably will be known before night. . Betting on the outcome today was general. It was influenced greatly by the couma that her husband. ex-Premier

Joseph Caillaux, had followed during

the trial. The prevailing belief was that because of his injection of political issuea into the trial the defendant could hope for nothing better than a verdict of "murder with extenuating circumstances." Such a verdict would render her liable to two years' imprisonment. This would be materially lessened by the provisions of the first offender's act. That former Premier Joseph Cail

laux, whose wife is on trial for the

murder of Oaston Calmette, editor of

LeFigaro, will demand satisfaction for the passing of a disagreeable remark

by one of the attorneys in the case, is

the belief expressed by his friends

Commenting on the testimony given

by Caillaux, Maitre Chenu, who represents the Calmette family, said, "It does not become M. Calllaux to come here and endeavor to soil the grave which his wife made." On this remark, made at Mme. Gaillaux's trial, the duel rumors are based.
