AIR AND AUTOMOBILE SPEED KINGS TO VIE Beachey in Aeroplane and Oldficld in Auto to Race at Dayton, August 1. DAYTON. O., July 28. Dayton, the "Hob or Aviation," Is to call the attention of Its citizens to the anniversary of the birth of the aeroplane once each year through the Inauguration of "Aviation Day." This has been decided upon and endorsed by the Oreater Dayton Association. The first event of the kind will be hold Saturday, August 1, when Lincoln Beachey, Harry N. Atwood and Orville Wright, will visit the fair grounds, where Beachey will do his famous loop-the-loop in an aeroplane, fly upside down, in vertical positions and in reality outfly the birds. Although the event this year will not assume the proportions that other events to follow are expected to reach. The Greater Dayton Association will use the coming exhibition as a test of what can be expected in future years. Wright's First Chance. Orville Wright has never Seen an aeroplane loop-the-loop and when first he heard that the feat had been accomplished was rather skeptical, in fact, declared the feat only an accident and could not be done under the laws of science. But Beachey has now many times accomplished the wonderful and yet scientifically unexplained accomplishment, although naturally at the risk of his life each time. Beachey declares he will take more satisfaction in the plaudits of Orville Wright, who will watch his air maneuvers at Dayton, August 1, than any other honors aviation can bestow upon him. Probably he may eclipBe previous records in his whirls and sommersaults In the air, for the praise of the pioneer airman. Races With Oldfield.
Beachey declares that hie loop-the-loop is not so dangerous as his race with Barney Oldfield, which will be another big feature of the meet at the Dayton fair grounds. In this race Beachey flies close to Oldfield's head around the half mile track, .taking the turns at sharp angles ana at high speed. Both automobile and aeroplane travel at the rate of nearly 70 miles an hour. The aeroplane flies eo close to the automobile that should an air pocket be encountered or some mishap occur there is not space enough between machine and earth for the aviator to regain control of his machine. Interest In the exhibition at the Dayton fair grounds, Saturday, August 1, is assuming large proportions in this city and arrangements have been made to care for one of the largest crowds that has visited Dayton In many years.
