Superintendent Change Program to Reduce Amount of Outside Work. SPOKANE, Wash., July 28. Meat lng the popular demand for lew study outside th schoolroom", the Spokane board of education has decided to lengthen the hours of attendance In the high schools by three-quarters of an hour. Commencing In September the high schools will convene at 8:30 a. m. instead of 9 as formerly, and will close at 2:45 p. m. instead of 2:30. In a statement regarding the change Superintendent Bruce M. Watson said: "This - schedule provides for seven school periods per day instead of six, as formerly. It does not contemplate more subjects or heavier programs for pupils, nor generally for teachers. The seven-period system makes possible a school program caring for the numerous activities of a complex high school organization to better advantage than the six-period plan. It also enables a pupil to choese his program to better advantage. The new plan gives every pupil one more period for study in school under conditions better for study than most homes afford, and also affords better opportunities for consultation between pupils and teachers." J. Orier Long, president of the board, suggested that the change in hours might interfere with contracts under which pupils were working outside school hours. It. was decided that such could be met by special arrangements. Mr. Long also pointed out the danger of overcrowding the school courses by giving pupils opportunity to take more subjects. The duty of guarding against this was left to Superintendent Watson and the new schedule passed by a unanimous vote of the board. Always Leads to Better Health. Serious sicknesses start in cisorders of the stomach, liver and kidneys. The best corrective and preventive is Dr. King's New Life Pills. SPRINKLED BORAX ELIMINATES FLIES Experiments Show Simple Treatment Cleans Filthy Breeding Places. WASHINGTON. D. C. Julv 28 As
' a result of experiments, the specialists ! of the Department of Agriculture have I
discovered that a small amount of ordinary borax sprinkled daily on manure will effectively prevent the breeding of the typhoid or house fly. Similarly, the same substance applied to garbage, refuse, open toilets, damp floors and crevices in stables, cellars 'or markets, will prevent fly eggs from hatching. Borax will not kill the adult xiy nor prevent it from laying eggs, but Its thorough use will prevent any further breeding. The Investigation, which included experiments with many substances, 'was undertaken to discover some means of preventing the breeding of flies in horse manure without lessening the value of this manure as a fertilizer for use by the farmer. It was felt that If some means of preventing the breeding of flies near a human habitation could be devised, the diseases spread by these filthy germ carriers could be greatly reduced. Prevention Important. While the "Swat the fly campaign," traps and other devices for reducing the number of typhoid-carrying flies are of value, they are of less importance Jhan the prevention of the breeding. It was realized, however, that no measure for preventing the breeding of flies would come into common use unless it was such that the farmer could use it on his manure pile without destroying its usefulness for growing plants, and without introducing Into the soil any substance that would Interfere with his crops. As a result of experiments carried on at the Arlington Farm, in Virginia, and New Orleans, La., the investigators found that 0.62 of a pound of borax, or 0.75 of a pound of calcined colemanlte (crude calcium borate) would kill the maggots and prevent practically all of the flies ordinarily breeding in 8 bushels of horse manure from developing. This was proved by placing manure in cages and comparing the results from piles treated with borax and from untreated piles. The borax, it was found, killed the fly eggs and maggots in the manure and prevented their growth into flies.
Meerschaum was first used for pipes in 1723.

WASHINGTON, July 28. An Inves
tigation of the supply and exploitation of the timber In the United State, with
the object of revealing methods of
preventing the present waste, has been
determined upon by the department of
commerce and the department of agri
culture. The Inquiry will be conducted Jointly by the two departments and
will cover the entire United States.
Advance notice of the investigation asserts that the study of the timber, supply Is to be undertaken In the be-
QUERIDO MOHENO. The former foreign minister in Huerta's cabinet, now In Vera Cruz in flight to New York, holds President Wilson responsible for Mexico's plights. "General Huerta has been proved not to have been responsible for the death of Madero," says Moheno. "The United States will be found to have committed the greatest act of international injustice - when the documents showing the real cause of his resignation are published. "We thought that the imperalist policy of the United States had culminated with President Roosevelt's seizure of Panama. Now, although President Wilson employs different means, he is responsible for the present situation. No mater what may be his motive, lie has taught the Mexican to hate the United States with a hatred which will last for centuries."
