WHEN THREATENED GIAHTSBRACE UP Menke Gives Reason for Recent Drubbings Handed Pirates and Reds. BY FRANK G. MENKE. NEW YORK. July 3 One of the big lecrets of the success of the Giants Is their ability to rise up in a crisis and soak solidly upon the knob any and all contenders for first place honors. It has been the case this year. It was the case last year and in nearly all the other years that McGraw has held the reins. The sudden strength shown by the Giants against strong teams, immediately following a period of floundering, seems almost uncanny. The Pirates breezed along at a merrv clio earlv this season. It seemed nothing could stop them. The Giants, In the meantime had been just merely umbline alone. Finally the Giants wandered into Pittsburg for a four tame series with the Pirates. On past showings it looked like three, out of four or four straight for the wants Rut it ended lust the other way. The fiiai -1 sumrised everybody by whirlinfrround and delivering a crushing bio. j. v. .1 ,,P i n Plrataa K UJJUU uuuica v l vJ M.vw. '. - i I J D i n m ' The Cincinnati Reds started on their recent eastern trip just a few games behind the first place Giants. The Reds against the Braves, Phillies and Dodgers fared mighty well. They played good, consistent baseball. The Giants, in the meantime, had a mighty job getting an even break with the Pirates, Cardinals and Cubs, who had preceded the Reds at the Polo grounds. Then the Reds came along. A "croocial series" was in prospect. Four straight would put the Reds in first place, while three out of four would put them only a few points from the top. It looked rosy for the Reds, for they had been playing real baseball, while the Giants for the two weeks previous had just been lumbering through their games. Well, the Reds came and the Giants whaled the daylights out of them. The Reds threatened to oust them from first place and the Giants stiffened their backbones, cleared the decks for action and took the entire series. The Giants hadn't been able to do much against the other three western teams that came, but just as soon as the team came along that was in the runner-up position they gave that team an almighty beating, and incidentally increased their hold on first place. In 1913 it was the Phillies who proved to be the Giants' most formidable foes throughout the year. The Giants had considerable trouble beating the so-called weaker teams., which the Phillies walloped with ease and dispatch, but every time the Giants met the Phillies it meant a beautiful beating for the Quakertown gang. And o it was in 1912 and 1911. The Giants found it rather rough sledding when they bumped the weaker clubs, but just as soon as they stacked up against real opposition against clubs that threatened to oust them from the top they played like fiends and won. They are scheduled to meet Kenney's Richmond team in two games, the Fourth and Sunday at Athletic park. A band concert will be given by members of the squad preceeding each game. That the Indians will prove a strong opponent, as well as a unique one, is attested by the record made this season. The redskins have been playing ball every day in the week during the entire season, and have won approximately thirty out of forty games played with teams of minor leagues of Canada and the northwestern states. Arntz has a trio of fast pitchers in Pinnance, Laroy and Skywalker. Pinnance has been with Mack's world's champs, and while not showing the class to displace any of the Athletic regulars, he made a creditable showing with that team. Laroy, a brother of Chief Laroy, of American Association fame, and Skywalker are both veterans. Opposing these men on the mound Kenney will have a corps of twirlers that promise to give the Indians an Interesting time. Vordenburg will start the first game, with Rusell Hawekotte, a Richmond boy, on the bench as reserve. Long Ludwig has sent Kenney word that he will be in the game Sunday. The remainder of the team remains the same. POSTPONE FINALS . Weather delayed the finals of the Junior tennis tournament at the Playground this week making it necessary to post-pone the start of the Senior tournament until next week.

After the depression, the stagnation, the despair over some blood disorder, it is fine to wake up to what S. S. 8. has accomplished for you after a few days' use. It puts the nerves and blood in harmony ; it arouses the cellular activity of the Uver, kidneys, lungs, and other excretory organs to remove from the blood the body wastes that cause nearly all sickness. This means that all decay, all breaking down of the tissues, is checked and repair work begins. S. S. SEEDERS TO CLOSE WITH CLEAN SLATE Hodge's Men Take Tenth and Last Win From Penny's Team." The Hodge roadroller refused to be stopped by the Mel Penny aggregation of Hoover-Bonders last night, crushing that team by the ignominious court of 13 to 4. This makes ten games that the Bookkeepers have played and
also ten that they have won. The Furniture dealers put up a miserable game in the field, giving Gardener no support whatever. Seventeen misdeeds are chalked up in the error column of the Hoover-Bond artists, while the Seeders exhibited their usual brand of tight support. This probably will be the last game : played by the A. S. M. Pennush0. ! as Hodge thinks it best "to quit while quitting is good." The score: .
